It would be great to have a recap of Strock Talk posted here since us out-of-towners cannot hear the show. Please let us know how the show went. Thanks.

Radio Questions - thought I would add them here instead of starting a new thread. 25,000 Watt Radio Station WAXY 790 AM www.waxy.com/ covers most of Dade and most of Broward County. See map www.waxy.com/index.cfm?page=about_waxy and broadcast the Don Strock Show Wed nite 6:00-7:00pm. Is there a station which broadcasts the football games in Spanish? Are the BB games broadcast in English and Spanish? Is there an on-campus AM or FM station which broadcasts the games?

Yes, and as a matter of fact, there are two: In Spanish on WWFE (670 AM) and WHRC (1550 AM). I am not sure, you may call the Coach and Randy during the show and they should be able to let you know. Yes, there is and they also have a website: Radio Golden Panther (WRGP 88.1 FM) is officially broadcasting all sports broadcasts. wrgp.fiu.edu/home/home.htmSo you out-of-towners (FIU Pride, NYPanther) may be able to stream the broadcast and listen on in. You can even call the show since it is a toll-free (800) number. For the English broadcast, the game will be broadcast live on WAXY (790 AM) and the game is called by Phil Schoen and includes color commentator Randy Kassewitz and Adam Levinson on the sidelines and as the studio host.

Some of the basketball games are done in Spanish... sometimes. Usually, though, it's just WAXY and WRGP.
WRGP does NOT broadcast Strock Talk; I know that for a fact. They do have their own sports show, however; it's called Panther Talk, and it's on from Noon-1p on Sundays. That one IS online. I don't know the names of the people who do it, but they are all students and is NOT affiliated with WAXY or Strock Talk in any way.
I've heard it a couple of times, and it's not bad, for a college station. The kids could use a bit more professionalism, but college radio's all about developing, anyway. They were actually doing a pretty interesting interview with Rick Mello about the football stadium, among other things, last time I heard it. I'm sure they'll be talking about this situation.

I wasn't able to hear the show tonight so if anyone could give a wrap-up I am sure we would appreciate it. Thanks,

Yesterday, there were 2 new callers (Patrick & Jorge (I think)). One of the callers informed Coach Strock of the EA NCAA Football 2005 game and how the roster was pretty much the same as the real thing. The other caller called regarding why there was so much of a gap between Miami and FIU regarding their baseball teams. The other callers are the usual suspects and can kinda get boring after awhile. That is the reason I posted this subject, to try and get some new callers to call in and create a buzz around the football team. We have a chance to speak with THE MAN IN CHARGE. We can present some of the ideas on this board and hear the answers from the "horse's mouth." There are even chances when AD Rick Mello is on the air. So again, I encourage you guys to call and get on the air. This will eliminate or decrease the air time that "GILBERT from Kendall" and "Mary Claire" have to discuss the ridiculous issues that they bring up every week.

Gilbert is someone who likes to hear himself on the radio and calls any show that will let him on. 15 years ago, when I used to listen to Neil Rogers on 610, he would call in every day.
Does Gilbert know anything about Golden Panther football or was he calling on the Dolphins or something; it would surprise me if he knows anything about FIU.[/size]

Athletic Dept. Phone (305) 348-2756 Tonight was the first night I was able to hear the Don Strock show. Gilbert was on first and took-up (wasted) 20 minutes. Some of the topics discussed over the 60-minute show were The Florida Marlins, Shaq, the Heat, the Dolphins, when is the Dolphins first game, when is their first preseason game, and hotdogs. Over the hour show very little time was spent discussing the FIU Panthers. Recruiting abuses, generally, were discussed, not pertaining to FIU. The first (FIU) topic discussed was the SBC Media Day Don just went to. He met some PR people he had spoken to in the past. He also met some coaches who he had known. It looks like the conference is going to be very competitive. Mentioned some teams are leaving the Sunbelt and they are looking to add another school(s). Western Kentucky was mentioned. I am not sure Western Kentucky is looking to be a small or average fish in I-A when they can remain in I-AA and be a very big fish. I would imagine that finances will dictate their action, which means they may be waiting to see how much money they will make - playoff games, and bowl games. Don mentioned they are considering some different stadium designs. Presently the stadium hosts some high school games and will bid on some regional playoffs. (Which will help pay the mortgage ). He didn't think there was going to be a problem with building the stadium on its current site. Apparently no decision has been made on the actual stadium design but he did mention the Troy State and the Chattanooga stadium as designs that are being considered. Also mentioned that he liked the idea of taking one end zone and making it a student area. It would be easier (to control admissions) to have an area for students where they could just come in by swiping their id card, perhaps making a grassy area where the students could sit and watch the games. I am not sure if that is such a great idea, perhaps they want to sell the sideline seats to ticket holders. ARod was finally announced as the next person. Then we had an add, then the host started talking about Shaq which took up 4-5 minutes. ARod finally got through at the end of the show, (with approx. 5 minutes left.) Jamie Burke has been cleared to play and is working out. Don is very high on the QB's he has brought in. What happened to Joe Rose morning show? FIU is negotiating with another network. Then host made some comments. ARod asked What about marketing? and then gave some examples of what FAU has done. We are not doing anything. Some kids are in school not everyone is living here so can't do things with the whole team. We have some things in the works. Host interrupted again. Made excuses for not doing anything. Don - we have some plans and you will see something in the Herald. Then ARod put in announcement for a web site he thought was pretty good www.fiuathletics.com. General comments Gilbert gets on the air because they get so few callers. FIU fans need to call in and get this show going in the correct direction - i.e. talk about the FIU Panthers. Right now there are so few callers they take anybody they can get. The host needs to learn that it is the Don Strock show and we are not calling in to hear him talk. I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he is talking to fill up the time since there are so few callers. Don didn't answer the questions I was interested in - What is happening with the stadium, what about marketing, what about working with the community. This is the forum to communicate with fans and Don should have said explicitly what plans are being considered. If you have never called in a show, write out a few questions; ask your questions, say thank you and listen. If you want to you can ask a follow-up question. Mike

Mike, thanks for the message and information about tonight's Strock Talk show. It is especially appreciated by us out-of-towners who love to get any info we can get.
You are correct about the type of callers the show "normally" has....Gilbert, the salesman from Sweethingyer, the English lady, and someone complaining about the hot dogs......it's kind of old...but you are right that real fans should call and make real and relevant sports/football questions in the show to curtail the "wasted" minutes....
Real interesting information about the team and future, but the one that got my attention is: Did Strock said his TV show won't be at NBC6 this coming year? I'm kind of surprised at that.....I thought they did pretty well the first year, presumably the second as well. The fact NBC6 is televising this year's Homecoming game (for the second consecutive year), I thought sort of guaranteed that Don Strock's TV show would be back at NBC6. Could you clarify that?
Anyways, thanks for the re-cap and appreciate your input as well as ARod's relevant questions.....We need to have more people doing so, so that us true die-harders can get all the good information we can get.
Good job.....Thanks

Well said Mike, thanks.... ;D Yes, Minotaur, that is the stadium. It is the current host for the I-AA Championship Game and has been for the past couple of years. Here is the link for the other stadium that was discussed: www.troystate.com/construction/fb/Please be patient with the above website (it has pictures) as it may take some time to load. It is Movie Gallery Stadium @ Troy State University in Alabama.Again, I do encourage others to call and ask some "thoughtful and insightful" athletic questions to keep the other "callers that waste time" off of the radio. Coach Strock and Randy can only respond to what they're given to discuss during a slow offseason. And with that said, they are usually sucked in to responding. The start of the season should allow for a more interesting listen. And I need others to call and create a buzz (i.e. Mike) to let the program know that we're here and supportive. FIUFanatic, Coach Strock stated that NBC6 as well as alot of the other news stations are gearing their programming to a more news-based broadcast so they are in discussions with other networks for the time being. He stated that the "show was very highly rated" and that it is a positive going into this season. He also stated that Coach Larry Coker of the UM Hurricanes program will also be moved from Channel 10 WPLG to Fox Sports Net. So that gives you an idea that no coach (even the more popular ones) is safe.
