has anyone called in and asked coach about the running back situation and who will be the #1 guy going into fall camp? especially since we will most likely be without the guy who was #1 last year to begin the season.

Today was the 2'nd show that I heard.
The show started out again with Gilbert talking about the Dolphins and Ricky Williams. Between the promos before Gilbert's call and the host continuing to talk about the Dolphins until the first break, 20 minutes went by.
Apparently this is being conducted, as a general sports show, not an FIU show.
About 6:25 the host and Don started to talk about FIU /me Camp is starting on August 8'th. They are going to put in the playbook. /me This year we have more of a veteran team, which will help. /me Last year we had some problems finishing of some teams because of our youth. /me Most of our players are back from their injuries, but there are still a couple who remain out. /me When recruiting players we hope all of the players are 4a, 5a, and 6a schools and are all state players. /me We also need to remind our players that the players on the other team are also top players
Host asked if there is anything in particular that you are looking at, positions, etc. RB - Strock mentioned a few of the RB's we have. QB - Also mentioned last year we had 1 QB and that he brought in 2 excellent QB's this year so this year we will have 3. Strock mentioned he likes to play a couple of QB's. DL - will be most competitive. We brought in 6-7 DL. We need more quickness and speed on the DL. Moss - Greg Moss has good bloodlines and can do KO and PR. (Jr. DB, 5;7" from Norland HS and Virginia Union
Then we came to the break and after the break we heard 7 minutes of the Phillis, Marlins, Atlanta, Mets, Expos, Texas Rangers and Yankees. Then a discussion about Tennessee the Gators and their recruiting. Call #2 talked about the Dolphins and after this call talked about the NFL until the break
With 5 minutes left in the show caller #3, Larry asked about FIU. How many conference games are we going to play this year 4 - we are not a full Sun Belt member. Next year we will be a full Sun Belt member. (I didn't hear if he mentioned how many conference games we will play next year.) How hard is it to recruit since we are a new school and there are established schools down here. There are 5 schools in FL that have had success and they can only take 125 players out of here each year. There are many more good players down here, however there are also other schools who come down here to recruit players and he named a number of schools.
Talked about some of the I-A games why do we play against major opponents? When starting out a program there are budget issues so that is why we go and play away games at some of the larger established schools. The offer us guaranteed money. (Most of the I-AA programs play I-A programs to help finance their football program) We hope to be competitive with them. Mentioned we are moving the program forward and hope to have a new stadium within the next few years. We have an advantage over most schools in FL because our stadium is on campus. The kids can look out the window and see where they will play.
First game is Thursday, September 2 and is the 1'st of 4 games which will be televised back to our fans. Kickoff is at 8:00pm
Personal comments: The show doesn't have a following. People are not turning in. Will it improve when the football season starts? I hope so. FIU should put a line on every piece of literature that goes out about his show.
Something needs to be done to make the show (more) profitable so that it can be broadcast more than once per week.
I would like to see Don bring information to every show about things that are happening within the athletic department. Give people a reason to turn in to his show. Bring in his assistant coaches. With over a dozen coaches on staff, the AD, Assistant AD's, compliance officer, Football secretary, etc there are plenty of people who could add an insight into the football program and how it works. There is one university I speak with and learn more about the program from her than from anyone else.

I caught the last part (10 min.) of the show today (7/28/04) and he stated that we will be playing some interesting Div. I-A teams next year in 2005. The Kansas State Wildcats who've been a pretty good team in the past and beat the #1 (at the time) Oklahoma Sooners in last year's (2003) Big 12 Championship game throwing the whole national championship picture into chaos. We also will be battling the Texas Tech Red Raiders texastech.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/060904aaa.html on Sept. 10, 2005 in Lubbock Texas. Both teams belong to the Big 12 Conf. which include teams such as the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Colorado Buffalo, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, the Oklahoma Sooners, the Texas Longhorns, etc. We will also play 4 or 5 Sun Belt Conf. teams and there are still some open slots on the list to schedule some more teams. So all in all I caught some pretty good info. during the last part of the show. Did anyone catch the beginning? Next week, Coach Strock will start to break down the team so that we have a good picture of the potential starters and how the rest of the depth chart will be structured. So tune in

Apparently this is being conducted, as a general sports show, not an FIU show. This show is mainly caller-driven and Coach Strock discusses football a majority of the time. One reason that FIU is not discussed as much in the off-season is because a number of the players are not on campus or there isn't much going on outside of the spring camp. Unfortunately, like any other radio talk show, most of the people that listen DO NOT call in. So you have to listen to whatever Gilbert, etc. want to discuss. Again, if you call in Mike and have a set amount of questions, then we can get the show to be mainly about the FIU program. Greg Moss is the cousin of the New York Jets WR Santana Moss and of UM's Sinorice Moss. He is a speedster that specializes in kick and punt returns. He really showed his worth in last season's game vs. Carson-Newman. The show is usually longer (90 min. instead of 60 min.) during the season. I called again but ran out of time so the producer asked that I call back during next week's show. I do agree that the show can be advertised better to get other students and fans to tune in. As far as being broadcast more than once per week, that is impossible because the coach has a job and doing so would take away from his being able to coach properly. If you don't believe me, show me where any other football coach in America does a radio show more than once per week. Now I do agree with this and may request this in the future. I have heard AD Rick Mello on the show before. I would like to hear about other areas regarding the football program as a whole including defensive, offensive, and special teams coaches. But I'll wait and see what is coming up in the near future with the season being right around the corner.

I listened to the last couple of minutes also, only heard Larry's call. Anyways, what I was curious about was the fact that Coach Strock mentioned that next year we would play a full Sun Belt schedule but then he said that includes 5 games. Wouldn't a full Sun Belt schedule include 7 games? Was he just talking about home games? That was a bit confusing. Hopefully next week i'll remember and try to call in.
I like the fact we're playing such big schools although i'm afraid of the outcome. I know in 2006 we have a game @ Alabama scheduled so we are playing some big time teams. I would prefer to play some MAC or C-USA teams as well to see how we stack up against those guys. It'd be great to schedule UCF or USF just to get the more local games going.

I too used to listen to this show but with Gilbert Caswell and Mary Claire talking about whatever was on their mind it got boring
We need to bring in other coaches from FIU I would love to hear Karl kremser talk about mens soocer quest for the national championship
the program needs to concentrate on FIU athletics in general and football specifically IT is a FIU program so please quit talking about the Dolphins and Mary Claires love life

In response to Maxx, we need to play big name schools. We don't have the luxury of waiting 20 years to build up our program. To make sure top notch recruits don't go to out of state schools, we need to have a big-time schedule. That means tough OOC games against big name schools. If you were a kid looking for schools, would you rather go to a program that plays an SBC schedule plus a couple WAC/MAC teams or a program with an SBC schedule that plays 'Bama, Kansas State and other known schools? From a fan perspective I'm more interested in latter, let alone if I was a potential recruit. Unlike most programs that get blown out of the water in those games, in a couple of years this program will be able to hang in those games - see how we hung around with Troy just last year! FAU should be able to hang in the first half with Hawaii. They should lose that one in the second half. It's not due to talent but overall depth. Since both FIU and FAU are now moving up, we're just now getting the full allotment of scholarships. Give us 2 years each to have decent depth on our rosters. There's no doubt our starters are very good. For TV reasons you also want those tough games against "big names." No one in Miami is going to care much to watch FIU vs. Fresno State. FIU vs. 'Bama, now that peaks peoples' interest. Doesn't the thought of watching that one just give ya goose bumps? Plus the K-State deal includes a return game once we get our 30k stadium. No knock on the SBC teams but that game would draw a lot of interest down here, far more than some SBC teams (since they're less known). Finally, money! We need the money from those games. So yes, we'll have to be money sleepers the first couple of years until we get our feet on the ground.
Like Strock said, FSU played killer schedules and lost until one day they knocked off Nebraska (or Oklahoma - don't rememeber). Ever since then FSU is FSU. One day, FIU will be FIU.

MaXx, I think this is because, as with any other conference, you don't play every foe in your conference every year which allows for a rotation of sorts. Unless you have a rival which the conferences like to pit against one another every year (i.e. Miami vs. Florida [ACC], Michigan vs. Ohio State , FIU vs. FAU [SBC], Oklahoma vs. Texas , etc.). For example, look at UM's schedule and you may notice that they won't play Maryland or Duke this year. They have a set rotation that allows for certain teams to play every year whereas other teams rotate in playing one another. See here: theacc.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/101703aag.html This allows for a variety in scheduling from year to year with the rivalries remaining and the teams being able to schedule non-traditional opponents. Hopefully, in the near future, we can either have 12 teams in the SBC to create a championship game or we can get scooped up by another conference that has a championship game. My personal preference is on the former not the latter, hoping that the SBC will grow into a strong, competitive conference that will have a chance to play for a national title. If not, then playing in a bowl is sort of a waste of time if it doesn't count for anything. That brings me to another subject that I won't discuss right now. (Hint: Div. I-A needs a playoff system like basketball or I-AA football) Hope this helps

I can't agree with you more X. Strock's mentality is a good one. "To be the best, you have to play with the best." You can see that we have the talent at FIU. I'm convinced that once the BIG 3 finish recruiting, there is so much more talent left that we have no other choice but to get better. We almost pulled out some close games last year. Like the saying goes, "What doesn't kill you will only make you stronger". That is why you see teams that are left in the Big East (i.e. Pittsburgh, West Virginia, etc.) are still good teams. They got beat by Miami and started getting better after awhile. Check out a portion of this article that I found regarding Troy State: Through its brief existence in Division I-A football, Troy University built the way up-and-coming programs always have built. The Trojans put together ridiculously murderous schedules, ones filles with dollar-plentiful road games so the athletic department could pay its bills. They soldiered on as a national independent, an endeavor that, except for Notre Dame or a service academy, is akin to a funeral procession.
Larry Blakeney’s program was battered and bruised but not beaten up. It survived Nebraska and Miami, Mississippi State and [glow=red,2,300]Kansas State (look familiar FIU fans - in 2005)[/glow], Missouri, Virginia and Minnesota. Troy emerged with a handful of starters sidelined by injury by season’s end in 2003, finishing 6-6 after consecutive victories at Utah State and over Louisiana-Monroe. And then the light began shining.
Look at our schedule last year and this year. He is scheduling some very good games and like X said, it does give me goose bumps!!! ;D

I understand the reasoning for scheduling those big tier teams, i'm just saying that in addition we should try to play some MAC and C-USA teams to see how we stack up against these guys. Playing against a UCF, USF or Marshall is a very attractive game just like playing against Kansas State, especially if we can get those guys to come play here. About the Sun Belt schedule, because the Sun Belt is only made of 8 teams, there are no rotating schedules. Every team will play against every team, take FAU's future schedules as an example, this is already posted on their site. You can see that they will play all of the Sun Belt teams each season, so why is it that we would only play 5? Maybe it was just a mistake by the Coach. I hope this is of some interest. When discussion the number of games we can schedule the NCAA has an opinion on that like everything else . We can play a maximum of 11 games per year. That provides us with the opportunity to schedule 3 (high-paying) OOC football games. Article 17 Playing and Practice Seasons
