BOCA RATON - Florida Atlantic baseball coach Kevin Cooney, who built the Owls into a nationally-recognized program during his 21 years at FAU, announced Thursday that he will retire at the end of this season.
Cooney, 57, is 739-469-4 at FAU and 879-519-9 in his 25 years as a college coach.
Cooney began his career at FAU in 1988 and has had a winning record in 18 of the previous 20 seasons, and the Owls are 23-16 this season.
Cooney will be moving with his wife and two children to a 200-acre farm in Loudon, Tenn., which is near Knoxville.
Wow this is a shocker.....i wouldn't have expected this so soon...I know 21 years is a lot but his team was starting to get good

Wow....a surprise it is....I guess he wanted to leave on his own terms, and didn't want to happen to him the way it ended up with Danny Price. A shocker. In any event, I don't know what's going on in Boca, but it seems many coaches there are leaving the program...or wanting to leave FAU, including their AD's overtures to different programs.

I got to believe the state university current budget crisis is hurting them even more than it is us.
That extra year we waited to launch football continues to pay dividends in financial stability.
