Friends,
First, I love FIU Greeks. And second, in the spirit of full disclosure, I’m not a Greek.
So then what am I calling out?
I’m calling out FIU Greeks lack or presence at sporting events.
As an alum, I look forward to going to events where there is good FIU Greek representation. When Greeks are in the house, there’s that youthful energy only FIU’s Greek community seems to be able to bring to our college sports scene.
Let’s take last night’s basketball double-header against FAU. Our arena should have been rocking with noise and energy. Here’s why:
1. FAU is a cross-state rival visiting our house
2. We had pretty decent attendance
3. The Miami Heat’s official announcer was on the PA system
4. We had the second coming of DJ Irie as our DJ
5. We were retiring the number of one of FIU’s finest b-ball players ever who happens to represent FIU in the NBA
6. We WON BOTH GAMES
Yet somehow, our audience was flat. I’m originally from the northeast and I’m convinced that with few exceptions, South Florida fans, particularly FIU fans, just don’t get college sports. Where’s the FIU spirit? What’s the FIU spirit? Where’s the energy? For all the whining about the administration at FIU, the fans are a key contributor to the casual culture of FIU sports. The only exception…FIU Greeks.
Again, I’m calling out the Greek community at FIU to participate more consistently thus energizing the FIU fan base, especially at key events like the FAU games last night (men and woman played FAU last night). You, the FIU Greeks, hold the key to turning FIU culture around. We need you. Will you come? And if not, why? Please help me understand.
