www.miamiherald.com/news/breaking_news/story/341148.htmlLow grade average? Don't apply to FAU Posted on Tue, Dec. 11, 2007 Digg del.icio.us AIM reprint print email BY OSCAR CORRAL ocorral@MiamiHerald.com Students hoping to be admitted to Florida Atlantic University would need to show a grade point average of no less than 2.6 to be considered, if the school's Board of Trustees approves a policy change Wednesday in a bid to raise admission standards. The Boca Raton-based state university found that incoming students who have below a C+ average have less than a 50 percent chance of graduating from the university, said FAU Associate Provost Michael Armstrong. Incoming freshmen at FAU had an average GPA of 3.2 in the fall 2007 semester, second-lowest to Florida A & M University's 3.1 among Florida's state colleges. ''If a student submits less than a 2.6, even if they have a high standardized test score, we will put aside their application and ask them to submit the next semester's grade,'' Armstrong said. ``We will recommend that those students start at the community college because they will have a better chance there.'' About 200 borderline applicants who would have been admitted under current standards would be affected at FAU, Armstrong said. For now, none of the state's other public universities are planning to follow suit. Florida International University, which had an average GPA of 3.7 for incoming freshman this semester, will continue to use a sliding scale which allows students with lower GPAs to compensate with higher SAT scores and vice versa, said spokeswoman Maydel Santana-Bravo. That's the system used statewide. ''Yes, it's getting a little more competitive to get into FIU, but we are not considering a measure like FAU,'' she said. ``FIU will continue to review the credentials of all applicants on a case by case basis.'' Armstrong said executives at FAU are trying to make it a first choice among incoming freshman instead of the fall-back school it is for many students. Armstrong explained that many students apply to other schools, such as the University of Florida or Florida State University and end up at FAU as their ''safety'' choice if they are rejected. GPA is a better indicator of whether a student will be successful in college than standardized test scores, Armstrong said. A high SAT accompanied by a low GPA could be a sign of a slacker, he said. ''For a large group of students who turn in high standardized test scores but have not done well in high school, they are bright and have the necessary analytical tools, but don't have the maturation and motivation to succeed in universities,'' Armstrong said. ``These are student who, even though they are capable, didn't do anything in high school, and they tend to not do well in the university.'' FAU also raised standards recently by rejecting students who required remedial work in math or verbal skills, Armstrong said. ''We have to increase the quality of the first-time-in-college students,'' FAU trustee Nancy Blosser said at a September meeting, according to the Palm Beach Post. ``I don't think we should hesitate at jacking the requirements up a little bit.'' According to statistics compiled by the Florida Board of Governors, public universities across Florida vary on their selectivity. Incoming freshman at the University of Florida in Gainesville had an average GPA of 4.1 and average SATs of 1275. FAMU, on the other hand, had an average GPA of 3.1 and an average SAT of 927, according to state records.

Well, hate to break it but 2.6 isn't exactly much better, what were their standards before jeez? But regardless, that's good news for our state universities, slightly better standards. Here's an FAU/FIU comparison. FAU on the left, FIU on the right: Students: 26,000 - 39,000 GPA: 3.2 - 3.7 SAT: 1041 - 1144 Alumni: 95,000 - 150,000 Acceptance rate: 59% - 37% Freshmen valedictorians: 0 - 18 Retention rate: 34% - 84% Law School: none- #1 in Florida (Bar exam) Med School: none - Florida Dep't of Health headquarters on campus Business School: good - #7 (undergrad), #18 (grad) int'l business in U.S. and #1 in Florida (Financial Times) and top 15% in U.S. (BusinessWeek), amongst many other high rankings. After looking through all this, I think we should be well on our way to Tier 3 for the U.S. News rankings. There's no way we should still be in Tier 4 still. GO FIU! And if you're interested, I found this link, stating that 1/3 of freshmen at FAU don't enroll the following Fall term, ouch! www.fau.edu/retention/components/President_Brogan_retention_presentation.ppt

Here we go again. Battle of the universities Med school: FAU: partnership with UM (joint venture), students currently attending and completing all 4 years. State of the art teaching hospital to be built on campus. Completed by 2011. FIU: no students and no facilities. $360,000,000 to raise. Why in the hell did you include Dept of Health? No on campus hospital. Research partnerships: FAU: Scripps Institute, Torrey Pines and German Max Planck Society. Harbor Branch which recently became a new campus at FAU. FIU: none College of Engineering: FAU: excellent. Ocean Engineering, #1 program in the country FIU: good. No Ocean engineering program. Not sure what they have. Accounting Program: FAU: past 10 years, maintained # 6 in the country on CPA exam FIU: good Facitlites: FAU: 7 campuses. Largest; 850 acres. 3 counties. Continuously growing. 2 marine facilites (Seatech and Harbor Branch) with numerous research vessels including 2 submarine pods. FIU: 2 campuses. Largest; 300 acres. 1 county. No marine facilities and no marine vessels. Campuses FAU campuses: 1500+ acres FIU campuses: 544 acres Sports FAU Football team: youngest football team to win a D1A game. Youngest football team to be in D1AA playoffs. Youngest football team to finish as high as 4th in the country in D1AA. Youngest football team to get a D1A bowl bid. FIU: 1-23 I don't know where you get your info from. FAU has freshman veledictorians currently attending. I've met some of them. FIU has improved their acceptance rate purely on the increased number of applications submitted. Not because of selectivity. If total enrollment were an indication of a schools quality, All the Ivy league schools would rate low as would many of the top public universities around the country. I'll send some other people over here to add more. I may have left some things out.

I'll send some other people over here to add more. I may have left some things out. 1. UM's med. school is not yours period, and the Florida Department of Health is moving its headquarters to FIU at the new Med School Complex they're building at FIU. Plus, we have partnerships with Jackson Memorial, Baptist Hospital, etc. 2. Research partnerships: Motorola Nanofabrication Research Facility for College of Engineering, International Hurricane Research Center for NOAA, Food Network for the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, FIU Tianjian Center in Tianjin, China, etc. 3. FIU may not have a Ocean Engineering major but we graduate the 2nd largest amount of engineers in Florida after UF. And there's the Motorola Nanofabrication Research Facility. 4. Accounting is part of the College of Business which is highly ranked. 5. We technically have more than 2 campuses, over 10 really. In more than just Miami. There's a campus in Broward in Pembroke Pines, North Miami, main campus, a campus in Tianjin, China, and another one in Italy. Amongst a bunch of other smaller facilities like the Wolfsonian-FIU Museum in Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale and Homestead. And seriously, the more campuses FAU has the more it makes it more like a "community college" (sorry, hate to use that term). All of FAU's campuses spread out everywhere, kill FAU, its resources and scatter everything all over the place killing its goals to be a "traditional university". Oh and yes there are marine facilities at the Marine Biology building on Biscayne Bay, it doesn't get more marine then that. 6. Campus: Size has nothing to do with the university's academics. See: Columbia University. 7. FIU may be 1-23 but atleast we're building a stadium. But congrats for you guys on the bowl. Oh and the basketball team and volleyball teams are good. 8. Because of more applications, FIU CAN and IS more selective. But seriously, I didn't write my first post to start a hate on FAU, I was just curious to see how we compared and put them up for others to see. Besides that, GO FIU!

naturally, i lean toward FIU b/c that's my school, but i don't see the point getting into a pissin' contest with FAU.
can we simply agree that both are good schools?
each has its specific strengths and opportunities for improvement.
this "competition" makes all of us, the students, alumni and south Florida community at large the winners since both institutions strive for excellence.

Our Law School is not 1st in the State anymore. It was when We had a 94% passage rate from the Feb. test but the July exam, we were either 4th or 5th with an 89.6% passage.

Still a very impressive showing by such a young College of Law....As far as the article goes, I believe it speaks for itself.

Just to clarify something. The partnership Med school is part UM and part FAU. It is a partnership. No decisions are made on the FAU campus concerning the med school without both universities approval. The UM accreditation is what is being used.
Obviously President Brogan had less ego and more cooperation in mind when he decided to go this direction. The joint venture is producing doctors, something needed here in So Florida. It didn't cost the state $360,000,000.00. It was a solution to the problem of a doctor shortage.
It is an FAU/UM partnership and yes, we claim half.
FAU will have a state of the art teaching hospital on the Boca campus. What is great is the hospital and med program will work with Scripps, Torrey Pines and Max Planck research institutes that have facilities on the the FAU campuses to come up with cures for diseases like cancer and other diseases. The future looks quite bright for FAU. There are other bio research organizations looking to relocate to join the others and will probably cooperate with FAU.

I recently read that we also came first this year for the MPRE at around 97% I believe. The fact that the FIU Law School has been able to compete so strongly in only its 7th year has a lot to say about the school. It's quickly become another FIU College of Business, where it consistently does well and is receiving recognition for it. GO FIU!

Just to clarify - A #1 bar passage rate / mpre passage rate for a particular sitting does equate to literally being the "#1 law school" in FL (although I doubt that is what you are saying). FIU is a 4th tier law school on par with St. Thomas and Florida Coastal (who at times can also boast high passage rates).

I was clarifying with the second post in this thread.
I work in the law school and I hear about the rankings and asked about them on a daily basis.
