Noticed yesterday that the Flags in front of the business building were not flying at half staff for deputy Paul Rein. Just curious why for officer Jose Somohano the flags were flying at half staff for a while? The only reason I can think of is that FIU is doing some sort of favoritism toward officer Jose Somohano.
I am going to be back on campus tomorrow and I sure hope I do see that FIU gives the respect that deputy Rein deserves just as they did for officer Somohano.

Probably because Jose Somohano was a MIAMI-DADE officer, whereas, officer Rein is Broward county officer. In addition, officer Somohano's services were held at FIU. Unfortunately, if FIU were to lower flags at half staff for all fallen officers not in Miami Dade, those flags would remain permanatly at half staff.

I live in Broward and all around Broward County flags were flying at half staff for Jose Somohano so I believe the "officer Rein is Broward county officer" is not credible. Also, it should not matter where officer Rein's services were held to determine if flags should be half staff.

I think you just discredited yourself there. Thats exactly what FIUPantherFan just said. FIU is in Miami-Dade not Broward, and Rein was an officer in Broward not Miami-Dade. Does FIU need to start flying the flag at half staff for fallen officers in Nassau County, New York or Jackson, Mississippi now too. C'mon guy.

I understand we can't fly the flags at half staff for everyone in the country, but atleast for all FIU alumni, whether they be in Miami, Palm Beach, Los Angeles, Toronto, or Dubai. An FIU alumni is an FIU alumni due an equal amount of respect regardless of where they died/lived.

Didn't know he was an FIU alumni, but have we flown the flag at half staff for other alumnus or even active students that have died.

Well then, that would be the understand as to why the flags are not at half staff. Somohano was an FIU alumnus, Rein is not.

I understand what FIUPantherFan said. I just disagree with his conclusion as Broward county did have enough respect for a Miami-Dade County officer to fly their flags at half staff so why shouldn't a Miam University have enough respect for a Broward County officer?
