This is such a tragedy. A 37-year old public servant leaves two children and a wife while losing his life in the line of duty. God be with him and his loved ones.

FIU University Park cancels Tuesday day-time classes due to Officer Somohano’s memorial service
On Tuesday, Sept. 18, the FIU Pharmed Arena will host the memorial service for Jose Somohano, a Miami-Dade Police Officer killed last week in the line of duty. The memorial service is expected to bring thousands of members of the community to University Park, creating traffic congestion in and around the campus starting as early as 7 a.m. and continuing through the afternoon.
In order to accommodate all those coming to pay their respects to Officer Somohano, day-time classes scheduled at University Park only have been canceled. Evening classes – those that start at 5 p.m. or later – will take place as scheduled. Operations on the Biscayne Bay Campus, the Engineering Center and other locations are not affected.
Tuesday remains a regular work day for all FIU employees. Employees are asked to allow additional time to find parking. Parking lots 9 (College of Education), 10 (near the Children’s Learning Center) and 11 (next to the Arena), as well as the Panther Garage, will not be accessible to the FIU community. Also, please note that exiting campus during the work day will be difficult.
The Golden Panther Express bus service between campuses and the CATS service between University Park and the Engineering Center will run on their regular schedule.
Questions should be directed to the dean’s office in each of the colleges.
