Board of Governors appoints Jorge L. Arrizurieta to FIU’s Board of Trustees
MIAMI, FL (July 2, 2007) – The Florida Board of Governors has appointed a leading advocate for economic development and free trade to Florida International University’s Board of Trustees (BOT).
Jorge L. Arrizurieta, the current chair of the International Policy Group at Akerman Senterfitt, began his term as an FIU in June.
“Jorge’s knowledge and sharp vision of hemispheric issues will be a valuable addition to the board,” said FIU President Modesto A. Maidique.
Arrizurieta, 41, is the past president of Florida FTAA, Inc., the private-public partnership led by former Governor Jeb Bush, charged with making Miami the permanent seat of the secretariat of the Free Trade Area of the Americas.
“FIU's mission is one I have always fervently believed in,” said Arrizurieta. “My years on the Board of Governors and the Florida Post Secondary Education Commission I believe have prepared me well to contribute to the impressive growth and progress FIU has had in the last 20 years. I've always been impressed with the university's programs in many areas especially in international business and Latin American studies, which put FIU in a very good strategic position to help shape policy in the region. I'm looking forward to contributing to this great institution.”
In the private sector Arrizurieta has worked as vice president of public affairs at Huizenga Holdings and for several of its subsidiaries, including AutoNation. Arrizurieta was also director of community relations for the Florida Marlins. Before that, he served as director of state projects for U.S. Senator Connie Mack.
Through his extensive career in the public and private sectors, Arrizurieta has volunteered his time to many charitable and civic organizations such as the Orange Bowl Committee, the Make A Wish Foundation, and the Beacon Council, among others. He is currently a director at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Public Health Trust in Miami-Dade County.
Prior to his appointment to FIU’s BOT, Arrizurieta was a member of the Florida Board of Governors.
Arrizurieta, his wife Mari and their three children Alexia, Alec and Sebastian reside in Coral Gables and are all native Miamians.
The FIU Board of Trustees is composed of 13 members: five appointed by the state Board of Governors; six appointed by the Florida Governor; students and faculty are represented by the FIU Faculty Senate chair and the FIU Student Government president. The Board is responsible for cost-effective policy, implementing and maintaining high-quality education programs consistent with the university’s mission, performance evaluation, and developing a process meeting state policy, budget, and education standards.
