Looks like FIU and UM are going to start cooperating their doctoral programs to better serve both our doctorate students and theirs starting this Fall. Very good news for both of us, even if it is with the UCG:
MIAMI, FL (June 25, 2007) – Florida International University and the University of Miami have entered a student exchange agreement which will allow doctoral students from each institution to attend classes at either university and obtain credit for their original programs of study.
The cooperation will allow FIU and UM doctoral students to choose from a wider selection of classes that will compliment their areas of academic interest. The visiting student will pay tuition and fees at their home institutions.
“This agreement magnifies the effectiveness of the curricula at both universities by building on each other’s strengths,” said FIU Provost and Executive Vice President Ronald Berkman.
Guest students will abide by the standards of the host institution, Berkman said. The agreement will become effective in the fall of 2007.
“This partnership will allow students at UM and FIU to take advantage of the educational and research opportunities at both institutions,” stated Dr. Thomas J. LeBlanc, executive vice president and provost at the University of Miami. “This public-private partnership will benefit our students and faculty, strengthening both institutions.”
The agreement is the result of ongoing cooperation between both universities at the graduate level in Latin American and Caribbean studies and tropical biology. Berkman said the success of those collaborations made it evident the model could be applied to other areas as well. While student exchanges are common on a case by case basis, it is rare to find them under the umbrella of a formalized agreement.
“This agreement gives additional breadth to doctoral programs at both universities,” Berkman said. “It also strengthens cooperation in research, which is the core of most doctoral programs.”
