Gov. Charlie Crist appointed Albert R. Maury, president and chief operating officer of Leon Medical Centers Health Plans, to serve on FIU's governing board.
''Albert's credentials will be invaluable to a university with FIU's characteristics and scope,'' FIU President Modesto ''Mitch'' Maidique said in a statement. ``His appointment and his experience in the healthcare industry are especially significant as we look forward to the opening of our college of medicine.''
FIU opened in 1972. School officials hope to begin holding classes in its medical school in 2009.
Maury, 38, graduated from FIU in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in business administration, majoring in finance. He earned a second bachelor's degree in accounting in 2002. The 13-member board is appointed by the governor and the statewide board of governors. Students and faculty also get a representative.
