Friends,
I'm currently considering graduate business school at FIU. In my discovery process, a recurring question that arises is, "does an FIU degree travel well?" In other words, when taking your FIU credentials outside of South Florida, is their any equity in an FIU degree? I'd appreciate your feedback, especially those alums residing outside of South Florida.
Thanks in advance...gpantera

well, I can not speak for business but an FIU degree in engineering does great out of south Florida I myself and many of my class mates have got internships and permanent jobs outside of south Florida. There are few big technical companies with a great deal of FIU alum outside of South Florida to name a few IBM, Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing, Chrysler and Honda. Those are few companies that I can think of that have a few FIU alumni right now. The big thing I here from talking to recruiters is that they like to hire from FIU because of the diversity they can find in just one university. Hope this helps.

I would LOVE to hear more responses to this as well. Right after I get my degree I am leaving South Florida and I am worried that people might hesistate to hire me because I went to a school not that well known to the public.

actually I think FIU gets more respect outside of Florida. I found it to be well known overall by academic types in all fields. And in many industries its well respected plus the fact that you went to school in the dynamic global microcosm that is Miami gets you alot of cred.
I was working in New York and am now in LA and in the world of Media its well known and respected.
You'd be suprised, idiot people who never went to college and don't have a real job can wear their 'Canes and Gators but FIU fills my bank account and has opened tons of doors for me.
Our generations of young kick ass alumni are only now begining to have their presence felt.

Don't worry pantera, we're doing everything we can to make that little sheet of paper more and more valuable every day. Law School, Medical School, Schools of Engineering and Accounting, B' School Campus, Football, 35,000 students, nearly 150,000 alumni....
This juggernaut is just beginning to roll.

Pantera, FIU has served me well in Miami, Tallahassee, DC and in all levels of state and federal government. The school is well known and, as NY Panther said, our young alumni are just now beginning to make their presence felt. Sadly, I don't think the university does a good enough job of promoting itself. In my field (politics), we have several Congressional reps, aids and public policy makers in prominent positions. That number will gradually increase, as will the knowledge people have of FIU. However, FIU needs to make everyone aware of our accomplishments. For example, not enough in this community know that all these individuals in public service have an FIU diploma - Federal United States Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen State State Representative Anitere Flores State Representative Rene Garcia State Representative Juan C. Zapata State Representative David Rivera Local Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez The City of Coral Gables Mayor Donald D. Slesnick, II Commissioner Maria E. Anderson Commissioner Rafael Cabrera Commissioner William H. Kerdyk The City of Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper The City of Hialeah Former Mayor Raul Martinez Council Member Esteban Bovo Council Member Luis Gonzalez Council Member Cindy Miel The City of Hialeah Gardens Mayor Yioset De la Cruz Council Member Rolando “Roly” Pina The City of Miami Mayor Manuel A. Diaz Broward County School Board Robin Bartleman So to end this long post - my FIU diploma has served me very well both with connections in the field and with the pocketbook

Great exposition Blue 82....The future is indeed brighter than what we already have, since our University is so young. All aspects espoused here will make our degrees more and more valuable. I know that an FIU Accounting degree in Puerto Rico is also well looked at, since the Managing Partner of one of the Big 4 firms is a proud graduate of FIU's School of Accounting.
The College of Business, with its new super state-of-the-art building, new faculty, new emphasis on technological advances and cutting edge display of them, inside and outside of the classroom, the growing force of our alumni, and newer alumni members, will make our degree that much more valuable....

GPantera,
A friend of mine has been working as communications director for hispanic communications for the US Department of Homeland Security for the last two years. She's very young, but she feels her FIU degree served her well.
Also, I've been accepted for a prestigious government run program in Spain, I move in September. Only 300 positions available for what appeared to be over 10,000 applicants. I'm CERTAIN my undergrad AND graduate degree from FIU gave me immediate distinction from the other applicants.
Good luck.
