The FIU community will join the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) during LiveStrong Day at FIU, on Wednesday, May 16, at 11 a.m., at Betty Chapman Plaza at University Park. The all-day event seeks to unite people affected by cancer and raise awareness about cancer issues.
Organized by Kerrie Rueda, assistant director of the Office for Education Abroad and College of Education graduate student Angel Garcia, LiveStrong Day at FIU is one of 200 LiveStrong Day events to be held across the country to engage communities with experiences that increase awareness and show support for cancer survivors and their loved ones.
"Participating in this event is important to me because I recently lost my father to prostate cancer and I want to honor his memory by bringing attention to this horrific disease," Rueda said. "It is an honor to have the opportunity to support cancer survivors and encourage people at FIU and throughout South Florida to unite together to end the needless death and suffering from the disease that kills nearly 29,000 Florida residents each year."
LiveStrong Day at FIU will include a Run/Walk through UP; "Survivor Talks," featuring members of the local community, including local performance artist Asia; tables offering a variety of fundraising opportunities and informational materials; and a number of health and wellness oriented activities. It will be offered in conjunction with the university's Health Center and Recreation Center and will be open to the public.
In addition to LAF's efforts in local communities, approximately 200 advocates -- with at least two from Florida -- will serve as delegates in Washington, D.C., to demand that our nation's leaders invest in resources, treatment and services for people affected by cancer and to emphasize the importance of making cancer a national priority.
