I was looking around University Park the other day and noticed that much of the space is being used for parking lots and garages. I would rather see the little valuable space FIU has to be used more for Academic Buildings and Athletic facilities. I know that parking is a problem at FIU but we need to look at other means of Transportation to get students to campus.
UF has a subsidized program with the Gainesville Transportation Authority in which every student is charged a minimal fee in their tuition for a pass to ride the bus which they can take whenever and wherever in Alachua county. I think we need to do something like this so we can utilize the space we have. I for one would rather drive to a nearby park and ride location near my house and take the bus to campus. This will safe me gas and alot of time and frustration trying to find a parking space at school. I just wanted to see what others think about this.

Personally, I would like to see some sort of circulator that runs around the campus consistantly and reliably. If it were a bus, something like the electrowave busses that functioned on South Beach or something of the sort. I have seen circulator type busses but have never seen one driving around campus. If the busses are being utilized, perhaps they need to improve the signage to better display where the stops should be.
I think it could also be tied in well with the City of Sweethingyer Transit Greenway plan and pick up some dollars from the People's Transportation Plan as a subsidy and connect the University Park Campus and the Engineering campus while also serving the residents of the city of sweethingyer. The system could charge an minimal fee (less than a dollar) and still generate revinue assuming that the PTP subsidy happens along with a consistant and frequent system.
Where I would like to see that system go is the eventual construction of a circulator streetcar system that would follow the routes planned under the trasnit greenway plan. Eventually there could be designated stops with clear signage about when the enxt vehicle would come and the line would eventually link up with metrorail in some way.

transportation and parking does suck on campus... Especially this time of year when the fair comes and takes our lots and garages.

Currently there is a shuttle called the CAT shuttle which is free to students that moves between the University Park campus and the Engineering Center. It runs around ever half an hour from 8:15 to 10:55pm. It circulates by the GC bookstore, the Engineering Computer Science building and ends at the Engineering Center
I personally take it and it works great for me although I would like to see it run more frequently and circulate around all of University Park But, with the parking problem at University park. I just pull up at the Engineering Center and get a great parking space easily there and just jump on the shuttle to University park which takes me no more than 10 minutes from parking to arriving in front of the bookstore.

We should also have a shuttle service similar to UM's shuttle which picks them up at campus and drops them off at Coconut Grove or South Beach. tinyurl.com/3ak6e3

We certainly need a great shuttle system at FIU that will link the whole campus. It seems to me that we are behind in this. Just doing a google search you can find that many other schools have great shuttle systems already in place. www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=campus+shuttle&btnG=Search
