After winning the Cowgirl Invitational in Louisiana last weekend, "Gofweek Magazine" announced that FIU was selected as the national team of the week, and Cowgirl Invitational winner, FIU freshman Cristina Marin, was also announced as the collegiate female player of the week!!!
Now, they go on to another tournament, this time in Gainesville, where 14 of the 15 teams competing are nationally ranked...including FIU, which is ranked now #86 in the nation. I don't recall, in all my years at FIU, a nationally ranked golf team in D-I......
Congrats to the lady Panthers in golf!!! That means, that together with women's team (which are also nationally ranked at #32), we have two nationally ranked women's teams in our University...Not bad my friends, not bad...
Congrats to the team!

Freshman Cristina Marin was named Gollfweek's Collegiate Woman Golfer of the Week after her victory at last week's Cowgirl Invitational.
The FIU women’s golf team enters this weekend’s SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational with renewed enthusiasm after some unexpected recognition. The 16-team Lady Gator field plays Friday through Sunday on UF’s Mark Bostic Golf Course in Gainesville.
The Golden Panthers earned their first team win of the spring with a one-shot victory over South Alabama at last week’s Cowgirl Invitational, hosted by McNeese State in Kinder, La. The team set a new tournament total record with a 54-hole score of 920 after coming back from seven strokes down on the final day of competition.
Not only that, but freshman Cristina Marin (Zaragoza, Spain) shot a final-round 70 to win the tournament by a single shot over three other players. It was her first college title.
Afterwards, Golfweek Magazine announced it was recognizing the Golden Panthers as its college women’s team of the week and Marin as its collegiate female player of the week.
“Cristina’s improvement at the college level has really been amazing,” said head coach Joe Vogel. “She has worked so hard at improving her short game and in this last tournament that really came through for her. For a freshman to shoot a final round of 70, which was the lowest round of the day, was really tremendous.
“To win our spring opener, coming on as a team like we did on the last day, was something special,” Vogel said. “It was truly a total-team effort.”
But Vogel admits that this weekend’s competition will be a step above what the team experienced last weekend. Fourteen of the 15 schools participating rank among Golfweek’s Top 100, including No. 5 Florida, No. 13 Wake Forest, No. 29 Louisville, No. 32 Georgia State and No. 35 North Carolina. FIU enters the Lady Gator ranked No. 86 nationally.
The coach says it will take extra effort by his team to finish among the Lady Gator leaders.
“I consider the Lady Gator as the best tournament we will play in all year,” Vogel said. “To do well in this field, we’re going to have to play better than we did last weekend in Louisiana. Every player is going to have to play good golf everyday for us to move up [in the rankings]. It’s going to take everything we have.”
Live scoring of the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational will be made available on www.golfstat.com.
