The FIU women's volleyball team came from 0-2 down in the match and fought off three match points in game five before coming away with an 18-30, 22-30, 30-24, 30-27, 18-16 upset win over host Missouri to conclude action Sunday afternoon at the Tiger Invitational.
''I am so proud of our team and how we bounced back after a tough loss to Notre Dame yesterday,'' FIU head coach Danijela Tomic said. ``It was a total team effort and our girls never gave up.''
After all three teams finished with identical 1-1 records for the event, Missouri (3-2) was named the tournament champion by virtue of total games won and lost (5-3 versus 5-5 for FIU and 3-5 for Notre Dame).
Sophomore All American Yarimar Rosa was named the Tiger Invitational Most Valuable Player while sophomore Olga Vergun was named to the all-tournament team.
After fighting back from 0-2 down to level the match, the Golden Panthers (3-2) carried the momentum into game five by racing out to a 4-0 lead to prompt a Missouri timeout. FIU extended the lead to six at 11-5, but the Tigers leveled the game at 14-14. FIU then took advantage of its lone match point at 17-16 with a kill from Vergun to take the match.
Missouri, ranked 20th nationally coming into the season, had bounced back from a season-opening loss to Ole Miss and looked to have returned to form.
The emergence of freshmen Ines Medved and Natalia Valentin, along with the continued strong form of Vergun and Rosa, were enough for FIU to overcome the Tigers, however.
