FIU's Naim Yisrael, whose specialty is the 400-meter hurdles, has broken the school record five times this year and is headed for the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., June 6-9.
Yisrael automatically qualified when she finished fourth in the NCAA East Regional at Gainesville by running 57.14, her best time yet. It will be her first time in the nationals.
Joeane Jadotte (discus) and India George (long jump) were at-large selections. In the regional, Jadotte was sixth (50.52 meters) and George was 14th (5.96 meters).
"I've surprised myself," Yisrael said. "[Sprinters and hurdlers coach Eric Campell] helped with some details like my start and my steps approaching the hurdles. He also improved my conditioning. He told me that it would be hard, and it was. He told me to stay with it, and it would pay off. It did."
Yisrael has gone from being satisfied to pushing herself to get better.
"She is mentally tough," coach Steve Rubin said. "I consider the 400-meter hurdles and the 800 meters to be the toughest on your energy systems, and the hurdles are the hardest because of the jumping. She doesn't just try to survive at the end of a race. She competes."
Yisrael, a junior, has been on a roll.
"With Eric's help, she has found a way to blossom," Rubin said. "Mentally, physically and technically, it is the best that she has been. She has had to adjust her expectations upward throughout the year."
At the nationals, Yisrael hopes to run under 57 seconds, make the final eight and be an All-American.
"If I can get into the last race, I will be happy," Yisrael said. "In the last race, you never know what can happen."
