Posted on Sat, May. 19, 2007 Eketebi to coach FIU soccer
BY PETE PELEGRIN Florida International University athletic director Pete Garcia hired Munga Eketebi as the men's soccer coach. Eketebi takes over for Karl Kremser, who retired last week. Eketebi has been associated with FIU men's soccer for nearly 25 years. After playing at FIU from 1983-86, Eketebi has been an assistant coach with the Golden Panthers the past 20 years.
''I can never thank Coach Kremser enough for everything he's done for me,'' Eketebi said. ``It's always tough to come in and follow someone like that.
``His accomplishments at FIU speak for themselves and he definitely left big shoes to fill, but I am looking forward to this opportunity.''
Eketebi's 50 career goals are tied for the most in the program's history. His 124 career points rank second and his 24 career assists are tied for fifth.
He scored six playoff goals for the FIU team that won the 1984 NCAA Division II national championship. In 1985, the Golden Panthers lost to Seattle Pacific in the national championship match.
A three-time All-American, Eketebi was selected as Florida's Player of the Year in 1985.
''Coach Eketebi is a well-respected member of the soccer community and he is deserving of this chance to lead our program,'' Garcia said. ``We are excited about the future of men's soccer at Florida International University.''

NY: Kremser was in the DROP Program. Every state employee has the option to be on it. That being said, he basically decided to retire years ago when he VOLUNTARILY chose to be a part of that program.

I am glad to hear that BLue82. I support PG and Kremser so that is great news.

Wrong,
Karl was forced out. He was in the drop but he wanted to stay longer which is something you can do while in the drop. something happened back in November between Garcia and Kremser and that was basically that. The reason munga got to take over is because the soccer program will be canceled after next season and no outside coach was going to take on a lame duck program like that.

You can trash Pete all you want but facts are facts and the W-L records for FIU programs was horrible. I for one wouldn't mind if he fired everybody for all of the "fantastic" results that were achieved in the past 5 years by everyone previously involved in the administration.

It could very well be the theory fiu12 espouses of dropping men's soccer...that is what I fear is happening....If that happens, I guess PG will finish off what Rick Mello started and couldn't do....
Wow...winds of change...

why would they hype up munga's hiring if they're planning to eliminate soccer in one year? the fiusports.com release had at least five comments from former players as well as bruce arena on munga.
i'm hoping they keep the soccer team. does anyone know how much it actually costs to operate?

after the PR mess that occurred last time, what makes anyone think they'll try to drop soccer again?
