The FIU women's track & field team finished second at the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Lafayette, La., on May 11-13.
Junior India George was named the Women's Most Outstanding Field Performer after leading the FIU women's track and field team to a runner-up finish following May 13's final day at the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Lafayette, La. FIU finished with 109 points, 34 points back of defending champions Western Kentucky and 15.5 points ahead of third place North Texas.
This marked the second year in a row the Golden Panthers finished runner-up to the Hilltoppers. The men's team came in 10th place with 16.33 points.
George is the first Golden Panther to garner the Most Outstanding Field Performer honor at the conference outdoor championships. She won the long jump title for the second year in a row with a personal best 6.45 meter leap (21'2") and came in second in the triple jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying 12.87 meter jump (42'2.75"), her longest of the season.
Junior Joeane Jadotte and sophomore Porsha Butler each secured a pair of third-place finishes with school record-breaking performances in the throwing events. Jadotte broke her own school record in the hammer throw with a 52.39 meter toss (171'10"). Butler also broke her record with a 41.95 meter toss (137'7") in the javelin.
In the men's field events, sophomore Tomas Sickus set a regional qualifying mark to finish second in the triple jump after a 15.16 meter leap (49'9"). On the track, junior Jerod Wims scored in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. He came in fifth in the 100 (10.63) and seventh in the 200 (21.62).
Several Golden Panthers on both the men's and women's teams posted NCAA Regional qualifying marks throughout the season, and they will compete at the NCAA Track & Field East Regional in Gainesville, Fla. on May 25-26.
