Head Tennis Coach Ronni Bernstein was honored again Thursday evening when FIU president Dr. Modesto Maidique presented her with the university’s Presidential Excellence Award at the 2007 Spirit of Excellence Employee Recognition Award Ceremony.
This award is presented to a member of the faculty, administration or staff who supported the institutions strategic and operational excellence by restructuring processes to improve efficiency, productivity and quality; and/or implementing critical programs; receiving recognition from peers in the academic community for excellence in research, scholastic, or creative activities. Coach Bernstein was one of 30 nominees for the award.
Bernstein has led her teams to three consecutive Sun Belt Conference Championships and has been named the conference coach of the year in each of those three seasons. Earlier this week, her Golden Panthers were selected to compete at the NCAA Regional in Gainesville, marking FIU’s fifth appearance in the NCAA since 2001 and the program’s third-straight invitation.
Her teams have consistently been ranked in the top 40 in the NCAA since 2005 and this year’s squad was recently awarded the 2007 FIU adidas Athletic Director’s Award for the team with the overall highest GPA and attained a 989 APR rate, which ranks them in the top 15 percent nationally.
Bernstein and her team are also very involved in the community, hosting a number of camps and clinics throughout the season. This past year, the tennis team hosted the 2006 United Way Tennis Day at the Golden Panther Tennis Courts. Her team has also participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and attended pep rallies for elementary students preparing to take the FCAT exams.
