FGCU has already beaten us in basketball and today they broke out the wuppin sticks on our baseball team. Let's pray FGCU doesn't field a football team.
Baseball loses to Florida Gulf Coast, 13-1

MIAMI (www.fiusports.com) – The FIU baseball team lost to Florida Gulf Coast 13-1 Wednesday night at University Park Stadium. FIU dropped to 1-4 on the season. FGCU remained undefeated and improved to 4-0.
FGCU sophomore right-hander Pete Woodworth (1-0) went six strong innings and gave up one run on two hits with six strikeouts and a walk to earn the win. Freshman Daniel DeSimone (0-1) was charged with the loss in his first career start, giving up four earned runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.
Junior second baseman Ryan Mollica drove in FIU’s only run with a single in the fifth inning. Catcher Kevin Mirabal was the only other Golden Panther with a hit.
Eagles right fielder Ozzie Borrell went 5-for-6 with four RBI, homering and doubling twice to lead the FGCU attack. Leadoff man Josh Upchurch went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Second baseman Casey Coleman went 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored.
FGCU chased DeSimone in the top of the second, starting the inning with four consecutive hits. Vinnie Scarduzio led off the inning with a single to right and scored on Paul Fibbe’s double to left-center. Coleman reached on an infield single to third and Stephen Wickens loaded the bases with a bunt single. Upchurch scored Fibbe with a sacrifice fly to right. DeSimone walked Stephen Rassel to load the bases, setting up Borrell’s two-run single up the middle. Senior Kyle Preshong was called in from the bullpen to end the rally, striking out Tim Roberson and forcing Jason Peathingy to fly out with FIU down 4-0.
The Golden Panthers missed one of its few scoring opportunities in the bottom of the third, with Woodworth striking out Raimy Fuentes with the bases loaded to end the scoring threat.
Preshong held the Eagles scoreless until there were two outs in the top of the fifth. He hit Fibbe and gave up a RBI double to Coleman to make it 5-0, FGCU.
Woodworth was invincible until the fifth. He issued walks to Javier Sujo and Mirabal to start the inning, but nearly worked himself out of the jam. Junior Arrojo struck out and Corey Lozano flied out to center. But Mollica delivered with a two-out single to left to bring in Sujo for FIU’s only score of the game.
The ground FIU made up in the fifth was quickly erased in the top of the sixth with a two-run shot from Borrell off freshman reliever Garret Trezona. Eric Horstmann replaced Trezona to start the seventh and gave up a two-run home run to Coleman, providing a 9-1 FGCU lead.
Borrell hit a leadoff double in the eighth off James Lajiness and scored on Peathingys’ double-play ball for a 10-1 lead. The Eagles added three more runs in the ninth against Jason Santana on a two-run homer from Upchurch and a wild pitch that allowed Coleman to score.
FIU returns to action with a four-game series against Wagner, beginning Friday at 7 p.m. at University Park.
