Louisiana State athletic director Skip Bertman knows a thing or two about college baseball, having won five College World Series in 17 years.
Bertman thinks the Florida International baseball program is headed in the right direction with the hiring of coach Turtle Thomas.
''Each year this program is going to keep getting better and better under Turtle,'' said Bertman, who was the keynote speaker at the FIU Baseball Diamond Dinner on Saturday night at the FIU Graham Center. ``There is no doubt in my mind this program will succeed.''
More than 500 people, including former major leaguers Charles Johnson and Jorge Fabregas, attended the FIU baseball dinner where Thomas and the 2008 Golden Panthers baseball team was introduced.
''It was a tremendous show of support for Turtle Thomas and our baseball program,'' said FIU athletic director Pete Garcia. ``This was a great way and a great night to kickoff our baseball season.''
FIU opens the season at home against USC on Feb. 22 with a weekend three-game series.
Thomas, who was hired last June to replace Danny Price, will try to get the Golden Panthers back into the NCAA postseason after a five-year absence.
Thomas said that FIU will play every Division I baseball team in Florida in the next two years with the exception of Florida.
''But we're working on that one,'' Thomas said.
Among the other future scheduling highlights for FIU are games against Florida State, Tennessee and Oklahoma State in 2009.
The Golden Panthers will play at San Diego, San Diego State and Missouri in 2010 and at Georgia and host San Diego in 2011.
