Story on FIU Sports Regarding the Newest FIU Alumns in MLB Courtesy: Glen Clark Former FIU baseball standouts Josh Banks and Willie Collazo made their Major League debuts this month.
Joshua Banks debuted for the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday night against New York Yankees. Banks, a 2003 2nd round pick, came on in the 9th inning and faced Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera and Johnny Damon, retiring all three.
After posting a 2.65 ERA his final year at FIU, Banks compiled a 4.20 ERA in four plus seasons in the minors before being called up on September 4th.
Banks is the second Golden Panther to make his MLB debut this month. Willie Collazo was recalled by the New York Mets on September 2nd. A former 10th round pick by the Atlanta Braves, Collazo has posted a 5.79 ERA in 4.2 innings
In his final season at FIU, Collazo went 13-1 with a 2.94 ERA in 141 innings. Since being drafted in 2001, Collazo has posted a 4.01 ERA in seven minor league seasons.
Banks and Collazo join Mike Lowell, Brad Eldred and many others as former Golden Panthers baseball players to apply their trade at the highest level.
