What are your thoughts on the effect our new coach will have on the landscape of our baseball program? I find interesting how some ucg fans on their board have at least 3 different threads on FIU baseball, and how some of them try to instill some common sense on what seems the majority with their delusional sense of entitlement and false grandeur....They are reading this board and commenting over there as well.... mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?S=13&F=2930#S=13&F=2930

Fanatic, how many threads do you think they will have in order to prove their point that they don't care about us? They do protest too much, don't you think? I'm glad Turtle is in town, I would like to see who his pitching coach is going to be. I think Corey Polizano might be the biggest winner in DP's firing, his talent might not go to waste after all.

refresh my memory about Turtle why he "left" or whatever happened?
Turtle was an assistant coach at Miami and in charge of recruiting. He consistently over recruited and kept getting caught by too many kids showing up. As you know, we have 11.7 rides for the entire team and if you promise too many kids too much money, you have a serious problem. Like you have to tell a kid you can't give him the scholarship money you promised him. This was fairly common and isn't usually a big deal because most schools don't recruit so much locally and if you screw a kid from somewhere else, who knows?
Some parents got incensed when their kid showed up and tried to move into his dorm only to find out that he wasn't getting the ride he expected. They went to the President who called the AD and said they never wanted to have to face irate parents in that way again because they seemed to have been wronged. The AD called in Jim Morris and said the same thing. Turtle said he couldn't change his ways and despite several discussions, he said he would keep doing it his way. The final discussion was just before the annual baseball banquet and he was let go. He appealed to Jim that since the season was opening up in less than a week, he would be unemployed for a year. Jim kept him on but it was awful! No good deed goes unpunished. He even went to the CWS and after we won that year he went to LSU.
This is not an unexpected hire by Pete. It sure won't result in our continuing the series with them, IMO. He is a good coach and will get results for them.
this came from the UM page makes me think about our new hire !!!!

I think anyone we would have hired would have caused questions in your mind, but whatever. I'm really not concerned about what scUM fans think about our hiring practices or who we hire. I'm concerned about what Turtle can do to win games at FIU and take us to regionals, something that hasn't been done consistently in quite a while. I'd like to see him continue his streak of Top 10 recruiting classes at FIU. I've also changed my mind about who this will affect the most. The biggest winners are going to be ALL the pitchers at FIU, who will finally have a real coach to develop their talents! GO PANTHERS!

well i am concered because i dont know why we keep getting those scUM rejects then.. If they were so great at UM why are they showing up at FIU. How is it ok that we keep getting Um's REJECTS & PG is one of the main ones.. i think that FIU fans would learn a lot more if they would take the time to read whats being put out there on the canes board. It's not about them bashing FIU it's about what has left there in some cases fired and come to us and why they left there and what the TRUTH is behind all of it.. this doesnt even have to do about any of the old coaches this is about our new coaches in all sports and what PG is really going to do for us at FIU. He was a failure at UM who is to say he won't be here. Has anyone read what UM has said about any of this We are being laughed at BIG TIME !!!

baseballgirl1,
You don't like PG. All your posts reveal that. As such, nothing he does will earn your support. Your critiques are completely biased, void of any objectivity. With that said (or written), your credibility is of little value. When your source of info is the Cane message board, that's is all I need to know to realize you have an anti-PG agenda.
The facts, as published by national media outlets such as ESPN, endorse Turtle Thomas as a very solid hire for FIU. Danny Price's mediocre record the last 5 years was not created by PG. I'm sorry that DP couldn't hide behind his 20+ years of loyal service and was called to task based on the recent trend of his declining performance. The bottom line for DP: his recent downward performance trend was not compatible with the upward direction the new athletic administration is headed. For that, we should all be happy.
I don't like bickering with fellow G-Panthers, but someone has to call you out.
I'll drop this now and will not respond to your next post which I suspect will be chalk full of other Cane Board evidence that PG is a Cane reject and Turtle was a bad selection.
For the record, the Canes are the enemy will always find or create the negative way to portray any FIU move.

First of all, Turtle is not coming from um, he was a coach there, just like he was a coach at Clemson and LSU and most recently at ASU. So what do ASU fans think of him? mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=43#S=43&F=1682&T=622061"He was our best coach." That's from fans of a team in the CWS, what gives them any less credence than SCum fans? You can find whatever argument you want to try and bring down the Head Baseball Coach of FIU. You seemed content to want to give someone mired in mediocrity (DP) a shot, yet you don't want to do the same for someone (TT) who hasn't even put his team on the field. I can't wait till next year when I'll be able to point to these types of post (laugh) and be grateful that our Athletic Director Pete Garcia was NOT settling for mediocrity. And in response to how his opponents "hate" him, as per the sunbelt site, all I have to say is GREAT! Who wants a Coach that opponents like, the only reason they do is probably because they are beating him. No one likes to lose it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, kind of like the bad taste we FIU fans have after 5 years of losing.

Great, great posts by both gpantera and fiupantherfan!!! This lady brings the post (one negative, where there are other real objective ucg fans that deny that) of um boards as proof of evidence....just consider the source. Regardless...we will find out soon enough how good or bad decisions have been taken...don't you think?
I guess some people really, really, enjoy and feel content with mediocre teams...0-12 records, suspect/plain dumb coaching decisions ("he is bigger than me and wanted the ball"-type), and fear of change and aiming to the top.....girl....THOSE DAYS ARE OVER SON!!! TDAOS!!

Funny how anti PG attorney general, and DP defense attorney, baseballgirl is going to ucg's boards to try and find out some dirt from some of the very same delusional and false grandeur delirious fans over at that board, which she seems so intent on criticizing PG because the hiring of current or former ucg personnel....Interesting that some posters over there are more 'moderate' in their appreciation, but the most delusional 'hardliners' come to negate any thoughtful comment. mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=13#S=13&F=2930&T=621414&P=4That delusional um fan forgot to mention the article which mentions FIU grads have 2 of the 4 managing partners of the Big 4 Accounting firms, or the new state of the art College of Law Building, where students from FIU, which for the second time in 4-5 tries so far have LED THE STATE in bar passing rate, are now taking their law courses. That guy makes a racial comment about the makeup of student population/alumni group as if to denigrate the University...some type of character-flawed fan.....

With all the talk of Turtle Thomas' hiring, it should be noted that his team plays today at 7pm (EST) against Oregon State to continue its run at a College World Series. The link below covers the most recent victory for ASU in Omaha over UC-Irvine. Good luck to ASU and our new coach, Turtle Thomas. thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/061607aaa.htmlDevils Claim 5-4 Win Over UC Irvine In CWS Opener Solo blast by Ike Davis in 8th is the winner June 16, 2007 Box Score | Quotes | Photo Gallery OMAHA, Neb. - The Sun Devils played long ball in their first game of the 2007 College World Series, homering three times to beat the UC Irvine Anteaters 5-4 in front 19,638 at Rosenblatt Stadium. A solo shot by Ike Davis in the bottom of the eighth was the difference, as ASU improved to 49-13 on the year. Mike Leake got the start on the hill for the Devils, lasting seven innings and allowing four runs. He did not factor into the decision. Jason Jarvis pitched the final two innings, striking out three and not allowing a hit to get the win and improve to 2-2 on the year. Matt Spencer, who played in Omaha last year with North Carolina, put the Devils up 3-0 in the second with his ninth home run of the season, a three-run shot to right off Scott Gorgen. UC Irvine took a 4-3 lead in the fourth, scoring four times against Leake. CJ Retherford tied things up in the bottom of fifth with a solo homer to left center, his fourth of the year. All four have come in the postseason. With the game tied in the eighth, it was Ike Davis who stepped up and delivered the biggest hit of the ballgame. Davis hammered a 1-1 Gorgen offering to the right field seats, giving Arizona State a one run lead. It was the last batter Gorgen faced and was Ike's eighth round-tripper of the year. Jarvis walked a batter in the ninth but was able to get the Eaters after that, nailing down the victory for the Sun Devils. Arizona State had only nine hits, three of which were homers. Eric Sogard had three hits of his own, while Ike Davis and Matt Spencer each had two hits. Arizona State will now play Monday night at 4 p.m. Arizona time against the winner of tonight's Oregon State/Cal State Fullerton match-up.
