Florida International freshman southpaw Corey Polizzano was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week Monday afternoon for his career performance against Troy last Saturday.
Polizzano (Miami/Southridge HS) went a career-best 8.0 innings and held Troy to a single run in FIU’s 9-1 victory against the Trojans. He didn’t allow a hit to the Trojans until the fourth inning and only gave up six in the game. Polizzano retired seven of the eight leadoff hitters he faced and struck out four with six walks in holding Troy to its lowest run total in a conference game this season.
For the season, Polizzano improved to 3-2 with a 5.53 ERA. He ranks second on the team with 35 strikeouts.
Polizzano is the third Golden Panther to garner SBC weekly honors this season, joining left fielder James McOwen (2/27) and right-hander Chris Allen (3/13).
