The Sports Network
DATE & TIME: Wednesday, January 9th, 7:30 p.m. (et)
FACTS & STATS: Site: Pharmed Arena (5,000) -- Miami, Florida. Television: None. Home Record: Troy 7-1, FIU 4-5. Away Record: Troy 1-5, FIU 0-4. Neutral Record: Troy 0-0, FIU 0-0. Conference Record: Troy 1-2, FIU 1-2. Series Record: Florida International leads, 3-1.
GAME NOTES: The Troy Trojans will try to remain in the win column when they take on the Florida International Golden Panthers this evening in a Sun Belt Conference battle at the Pharmed Arena. The Trojans have played extremely well over the past few weeks, winning seven of their last nine games, including two in a row. The last time Troy was on the court the squad grabbed a convincing, 80-67 victory over Utah Valley State. Troy is 8-6 on the season, but on the road the squad has struggled, posting a mere 1-5 ledger. As for the Golden Panthers, they snapped a six-game losing skid with a strong, 69-58 victory over Florida Atlantic. Since the beginning of the 2005-06 season FIU has posted a meager 12-23 ledger in league action and that includes the team's 1-2 record in conference play this year. The Golden Panthers have a 3-1 edge over Troy in the all-time series, but the lone victory for the Trojans came this past season by a 56-51 margin.
The Trojans are only shooting a mere 41.2 percent from the field, but that has not stop the squad from producing 84.0 ppg. The best option for the Trojans throughout the season has been O'Darien Bassett, who is averaging 19.4 ppg. The only other player posting double-figures for Troy is Justin Jonus, who is contributing 12.6 ppg despite shooting well below 40.0 percent on the year. The last time the Trojans were on the floor the team grabbed a strong, 13-point victory over Utah Valley State. In the victory, Troy shot 50.0 percent from the field, and was led by Jerome Odem, who scored 19 points. Bassett added 18 points for the Trojans, while Jarvis Acker chipped in 13 points. As for Jonus, he was held to just seven points in the win.
The Golden Panthers overcame 19 turnovers this past Saturday, en route to an 11-point win over Florida Atlantic. In the victory, the team shot a staggering 55.6 percent from the floor and made an equally impressive 11-of-19 attempts from behind the arc. Kenneth White led the way with 17 points in the victory, while Nikola Gacesa tallied 13 points to go along with eight rebounds. Alex Galindo, who is posting 11.8 ppg and 6.0 rpg, chipped in 12 points in the victory over FAU. As for the team's leading scorer, Russell Hicks (13.3 ppg), he tallied only eight points in the contest, but lasted just 17 minutes on the floor because of foul trouble. Throughout the season, the Golden Panthers have had some consistency problems offensively and come into this game averaging a mere 65.5 ppg, while shooting 44.8 percent from the field.
The Golden Panthers are only 4-9 on the year, but all four of those victories have come at home. The Trojans should keep the game close, but look for FIU to slip past Troy for a tough Sun Belt victory.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Florida International 71, Troy 66
