Before I start, I would like to apologize for the long message but there is something I need to get off my chest. Like many of you, I attended Saturday's "Home" game against UM. While I was upset at the outcome of the game, I wasn't nearly as upset as I was at the fact the FIU fans were grossly outnumbered by UM fans. During the game I decided to look around and really analyze the UM Fans, and I noticed that there are three different types of UM Fans:
1. Students: They don't bother me at all. They have school pride and are not afraid to express it. I respect and admire their loyalty to their school. If this game were at UM, I would hope that FIU fans would have done the same.
2. Alumni: They don't bother me either. Acutally, I attended the game with my father-in-law who is a UM alumni. They are generally pretty calm but are not afraid to cheer for their team. Again, I respect that and I expect FIU Alumni (like myself) to do the same for FIU.
3. UM Fans that did not attend UM: (or any other University or College for that matter). These are the fans that annoy me. These are the loud, annoying fans that usually like to start the taunting and the other juvenile behavior. At the game was a fan, who so cleverly PAINTED a Edwin Rios Jersey onto his torso. His pants were hung low, displaying his UM boxer shorts. He was there with a few of his friends that were also dressed for the occassion. Now, please don't misunderstand me, people have the rignt the cheer for any team that they want, but please do not pretend to have the same level of allegiance that the Students and Alumni do. As I was leaving the arena these individuals were talking a little trash, not badly, but trash nonetheless. I humbly approached one these guys and congratulated them on a good game and the proceeded to aske them what year they graduated. His response was the typical...We did not go to school there, but.....(fill in the excuse here). Typical excuses usually include some type of distant connection to UM like, "I didn't go there but my Great Grandfather (or some relative) did, and I was raised a die hard fan." The fact of the matter is that these fans are UM fans because of UMs winning tradition. They are fans because UM won 5 national championships in football. If UM didn't win these championships, they would not be fans. THIS IS WHY I DO NOT RESPECT THIS TYPE OF FAN.
Sorry for the long post, but thanks for letting me vent. I feel better now ;D.
