www.miamiherald.com/588/story/158879.htmlPHARMED SUMMER LEAGUE Golden Panthers relish the summer league BY PETE PELEGRIN ppelegrin@MiamiHerald.com Florida International University forward Alex Galindo and a majority of his teammates have been playing a lot of pickup basketball this summer as they try to stay in shape during the offseason. But after a while it can get monotonous. ''We play a lot of open gym at [FIU's Pharmed Arena] or the rec center,'' Galindo said. ``But it's not the same as playing in game-like conditions. Fortunately for Galindo, the NCAA-sanctioned Pharmed Summer League opened play Monday night at Pharmed Arena. The league -- which runs for five weeks culminating Aug. 1 with the championship game -- seems to be just what a college player needs during the offseason. ''This helps you with your timing,'' said Galindo, who led FIU in scoring last season with 13.9 points per game. ``You're in a basketball game situation with referees and it keeps your conditioning up. This competition is pretty good, too, which should help us even more.'' Ten of the 12 players on the Golden Panthers roster are playing in the Pharmed League. But because each team has to have at least two Division I players on its roster, the FIU players were separated. ''That's all right,'' FIU forward Chris Fuller said. ``We play together during the season. The only other time we can go against each other is in practice, but those aren't game conditions.'' The Pharmed League will play three games each Monday and Wednesday, with the exception of today, July 12 and July 17.
