Head coach Sergio Rouco anounced that Tremayne Russell will attend FIU this fall on a basketball scholarship.
South Dade High School basketball standout Tremayne Russell has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Florida International University this fall and compete with the Golden Panthers, said head coach Sergio Rouco.
“We are always on the lookout and try to recruit the best local talent we can with an eye toward winning the Sun Belt Conference,” said Rouco. “Landing Tremayne makes a statement that we are moving in the right direction.
“We are extremely excited that Tremayne has signed his National Letter of Intent to attend FIU and believe that he will develop into a very good player in the Sun Belt.”
The 6-2, 175 pound All-Miami-Dade County point guard graduated from South Dade High School in 2006 and played as a prep at Maine Central Institute last season.
Ranked fourth among the county’s 2006 Top-15 Boys Basketball Players by inthezone.com and a two-star performer of Rivals.com, Russell was a four-year starter for the Buccaneers and head coach John Herron.
Russell showed consistency over his final two seasons at South Dade. As a junior, he was a second-team all-county pick who averaged 19 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals per game. A year later, he upped his scoring average to 20 points per game, along with three rebounds, five assists and two steals as a Miami Herald first-team All-Dade County selection.
In between, he was named the Top Lead Guard during a high profile summer session of the Five-Star Camp.
Coach Herron told Rivals that Russell did a superb job of running his South Dade offense and is a multi-talented performer. “His strength is that he is a pure point guard who can score,” Herron said. “He controls the tempo, scores and passes. People want to call him a combo because he scores, but I disagree. He is a point guard first.”
Russell moved on to MCI in 2006-07, a program that enjoys a reputation in preparatory basketball circles as a traditional powerhouse that boasts nine present and former NBA players including Caron Butler (Washington Wizards) and Sam Cassell (Los Angeles Clippers).
Russell becomes the second recruit of this year’s FIU men’s basketball recruiting class that also includes a pair of highly-regarded transfers. Last November, Rouco announced the signing of Southeastern (Iowa) Community College big-man Badara Ndiaye and acknowledged that 7-foot center Russell Hicks (Pepperdine) and shooting guard Kenneth White (Texas A&M) have been attending classes and both will become eligible to compete for the Golden Panthers next season.
