The Orange Co. Commissioners pledged $2 million for UCF's proposed Medical School (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orange/orl-bk-ucf101105,0,528885.story?coll=orl-home-headlines).
Has our much bigger county begun to look into helping support the FIU Medical School proposal? Now is the time. We need an emergency meeting from our County leaders, the Medical School meeting with the Board of Governors is just over a month away (Nov. 17th).
It's time to pullout all the stops; Orlando sure is.

Athough I haven't read anything about this, I heard that they guy who originally pledged $10 million, doubled that up to $20 million....We need other "philantropists" to up the ante, since even though it's now a "combo" deal between UCF and FIU, there's this conventional wisdom that sort of implies that the one school that has secured more funds, it's ahead on this race.
I hope Dade County, the Beacon Council, and other Civic and Goverment Organizations step up to the plate and put their money where their mouths are.....C'mmon local politicians!!!! Outdo them from Orlando...

I agree, Miami-Dade and all of S. Fla for that matter have grown by leaps and bounds since the mid-80's. It's time for our local leaders to stop thinking so parochially and begin to realize this community needs this type of infrastructure if it is to become a gateway of the Americas. Look at population estimates for the next 20 years for the state of Florida. Where are the doctors and nurses going to come from. Sure outside influences would love to be the ones to provide these high paying professionals to our community. There are Doctors and lawyers from everywhere but S. Fla. all over the place and those outside forces would like to keep it that way. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who is not helping to advocate for the new Medical School for this community has an agenda that is not supportive of this community. Those who are advocating 'more studies' have agendas outside of what is best for S. Fla. Watch what's being said going forward about this issue; true colors will be exposed.

Securing a Medical School for FIU could be considered, academic wise, the most important achievement and/or crown this university will ever have. Even President Maidique referred to this event as the second most important in the history of FIU, second only to its opening in 1972.....
The FIU people, and we, need to drum up as much support as possible, be it Public Relations, governmental lobbying, pressures, fundraising, etc., as it can mean hundred of millions of dollars to be utilized by FIU for the benefit of the Community as a whole, and for the university as well.....That's why I believe that the City, the County, the Hospitals that are to be partners with FIU in this endeavour, should hopefully step up to the plate and contribute, so that it makes the decision for the BOR and legislature a lot easier in terms of awarding the Medical School to FIU.....
