Well, with UCF, FIU will be allowed to make their proposal for a New 'Public' Medical School for S. Fla. this Nov.
FIU still has work to do as its 10+ year trek for the new school goes to the Board of Regents (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/palmbeach/sfl-ppfiu22jul22,0,699366.story?coll=sfla-news-palm).
Pres. Madique judges this as a positive as it moves the process to a "decision point".
FIU has much going for it; there's no public medical school south of Tampa, FIU's mission to support the minority community has been a resounding success, FIU's professional schools are among the best in the state (which bods well for another professional school) and S. Fla has a booming and aging population that is clearly under served at this time.
Is the time now for a new, public, Medical School? That decision will be made by the Board of Regents and the State Legislature. Stay tuned.
