Interesting release from Athletics, where they mention the "coaches clinic". It it, it seems, yet another recruiting tactic, as those coaches interact with FIU's, the system and how their high school players could fit within FIU's system, campus, and coaching staff. Pretty clever and good local PR....

FIU resumed its spring football work Thursday afternoon at the University Park recreation field in front of a group of very interested spectators. On hand were some 25-30 high school coaches from around South Florida who are taking part in the Golden Panthers second-annual Coaches Clinic through Saturday.
“We are opening our doors to these coaches and want to show them what we do, how we do it and why,” said FIU head coach Mario Cristobal at the conclusion of his teams two-and-a-half hour practice in full gear.
“We want to let them know that we are here, that we are here to help them and we appreciate them helping us. This is a little way for us to give back to the community and at the same time, let them know that we are going to take care of their players when they choose to attend FIU.”
Thursday’s work ended with the two-minute drill, which, for the most part, was dominated by the defense. On one series, the first team offense struck for a long catch and run by wide receiver Jeremy thingyens (Marianna, Fla.). But the defense stiffened and didn’t allow a score.
The second-team offense wasn’t as effective with the defense applying constant pressure on the quarterbacks and recording several sacks.
“[The defense has] a better understanding of the scheme,” reasoned coach Cristobal. “And they are playing more physical.
“It’s all about knowing where you are going and getting there fast. They initiated collisions today and were hitting people real hard. That’s what you want to see from your defense. The bottom line is that we are recruiting hard, we’re developing hard and you better get a job done or someone else is going to take it.”
FIU continues with spring practice Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday morning at 10:30 at University Park. All spring drills are open to the public.
