FIU Football Practices in Full Pads for the First Time
With summer school classes over, FIU head coach Don Strock welcomed the largest group of players this week to their first practice of the season in full pads, under breezy but dry skies.
Highlighting the morning session, Strock put his troops through Oklahoma drills--one-on-one full contact pitting offense vs. defense and, in some cases, veteran against newcomer.
“For the first time, you could see some of the younger guys were a little tentative, but for a lot of them, it was the first time they had ever played at this speed. It might take them awhile to adjust, but the effort was certainly there,” Strock said.
“They’re just still thinking too much and when you do that, you’re not aggressive with hitting the hole or running that pass route. There’s a lot of talent here. Hopefully, in the next week or so, they’ll have it down. They’re learning slowly, but surely.”
Among those at practice today for the first time was sophomore quarterback Jamie Burke (Sarasota/Cardinal Mooney) who entered last year as the starter, but went down in the season opener against Indiana State with a torn ACL. Today was the first time he donned pads since that fateful day, last Sept. 6.
“Jamie came out and looked excellent,” thought Strock. “You could tell he was a little unsure at first, but he knows where to throw it and what to do with it. He, along with Josh (Padrick) and David (Tabor) are the guys we’re counting on. They know our system and they are working hard, which is all you can ask for.”
There were several minor injuries reported, including defensive lineman Jonathan Betencourt (groin), offensive lineman Ben Reynolds (back pain) and linebacker James Black (right hamstring), but the most disconcerting injury of the day occurred when often-time offensive-line starter Tim Dierks (Clewiston) went down during team goal-line drills. He re-aggravated a left knee MCL injury suffered last season, the extent of which will not be know until he is examined later today by team doctors.
