FIU Football Weathers Strom, Strock Happy with Team’s Progress
Leave it to FIU head football coach Don Strock to turn a negative into a positive. With the Sept. 2 season opener against Jacksonville just three weeks away, he hasn’t had a full complement of players over the first four days of practice because of summer school classes. Yet despite that, Strock seems genuinely pleased with what his team has accomplished.
“To be quite honest, this week worked out perfectly,” he said. “The freshmen are getting more reps than they would have had if all the veterans were in. Now, we’ll watch some film and make corrections, which will only make us better.
“If the weather gives us a chance, we’ll start full-go tomorrow. With everyone finally out of summer school, now we can really get into our camp.”
Team drills Thursday concentrated mainly on third-downs and play in the red zone, with players in shorts and shoulder pads. With starting receivers Cory McKinney (DeLand) and Harold Leath (Tampa/Wharton H.S.) excused for class, youngsters like Chandler Williams (Miami), Hardy Houge (San Diego, CA), Chris Patullo (Weston/Western), Stephon Walker (Ft. Lauderdale/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Lloyd Moss (Miami/Carol City) where given plenty of opportunities to impress.
“It was good to get the young guys in and start getting them acclimated to our system, but tomorrow, we’ll finally have everybody back,” Strock said.
From having just one quarterback at practice Wednesday, Strock had the luxury of three signal callers to choose from today. But freshman QB Mike Chapman (stomach virus) was kept out of action for a second day and wide receiver Dan Landreau (shin splints), offensive lineman Johnathan Taylor (right shoulder) and linebacker Quentin Newman (right shoulder) sat out practice. Additionally, defensive back Malik Jones (left hamstring) went down during drills. Except for Taylor who is not expected back until next week, all are listed as day-to-day.
Friday, the team returns to the practice field at 9:00 a.m. (weather permitting) for the first day in full pads.
Season tickets and seats for the season opener against Jacksonville are now on sale. Call the FIU ticket office toll free at (866) FIU-GAME or (305) 348-4263 in Miami-Dade County.
