Quarterback David Tabor Gets Plenty of Work as FIU’s Lone Signal Caller
FIU head football coach Don Strock told reporters last week that he went out and recruited two additional quarterbacks during the off-season so he wouldn’t find himself in a bind.
But with sophomore signal callers Josh Padrick (Merritt Island), Jamie Burke (Sarasota/Cardinal Mooney H.S.) and freshman Tavares Kendrick (Florida City/Homestead) excused for summer school classes and freshman Mike Chapman (Orange Park) absent with a stomach virus, junior David Tabor (Kissimmee/Poinciana) was the only able-bodied quarterback to take part in the Golden Panthers one-and-a-half hour workout in shorts and shoulder pads, Wednesday morning at FIU Stadium.
“We had it scheduled where there would be two, sometimes three quarterbacks in camp each day this week, but of course, plans don’t always work out that way,” said Strock.
“Hopefully tomorrow, we’ll have four quarterbacks working--like going from famine to feast. Come Friday [with the end of summer school], they’ll all be here and we’ll get into a set routine, which will be important from that point on,” he said.
Despite the quarterback shortage, Stock said the team accomplished everything he expected and he never even thought once about going in himself and throwing as he was forced to do during several practices last year.
“I didn’t need to do that today,” Strock said. “Even though Dave has been in our system for four years, he hasn’t run the offense since last season and it was good having him out there doing that today.”
Tabor, who was the very first player ever to verbally commit to the FIU program back in 2001, was pleased with his efforts.
“I’m exhausted but it was good work for me today. Coach bases our playing time on practice performance, so I just keep working hard and doing the best I can,” Tabor said.
In addition to Chapman, return specialist Greg Moss (left hamstring) missed the workout and defensive lineman Brandon Higdon (right ankle) and linebacker Keyonvis Bouie (left knee) injured themselves during drills and left early. All are listed as day-to-day.
The Golden Panthers return to the practice field Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m. in shorts and shoulder pads. Strock has changed practice times from afternoons to mornings, beginning this Friday, with the team working out daily from 9:00-11:30 a.m., through the first day of fall classes on Monday, Aug. 30.
