Learning Curve Steep for FIU Football Newcomers as Practice Continues
The FIU Football team donned its shorts and helmets for the second day of fall practice, early Tuesday morning at FIU Stadium. As the emotions associated with Monday’s opening day began to ware off, it was down to business for the Golden Panthers whose ranks were thinned by about 20 players who were attending classes during this last week of summer school.
“Friday will be the first day we should have everybody here. We’re short about 20 players today, and tomorrow 20 different guys will miss,” said head coach Don Strock. “We’ve got to piecemeal it together right now, but we realize these players are student-athletes--student, first and athlete, second.”
Strock and his coaches continue adding to the team’s playbook and giving the majority of reps to first-year players who are expected to contribute this season. Because of that, play hasn’t been always as crisp as the coach would want.
“We’re putting something new in everyday and for our young, incoming freshman this is a completely new experience,” he said. “The pace here is much quicker then it was in high school. They’ll struggle with the learning end of what we’re trying to teach but I’m sure in a week or so, they’ll be all right.
“You can see a lot of the newcomers aren’t going full speed, probably because they are not totally sure of themselves yet with the offensive plays or defensive schemes. But with continuous team meetings and repetition on the field, the light will come on soon enough,” said Strock.
There were no new injuries reported following Tuesday’s work.
Strock also announced that because of weather concerns, the team would continue its morning practice schedule through the start of fall classes on Monday, Aug. 30. The team will practice at 7:00 a.m., Wednesday and Thursday. Beginning Friday, players will report for practice from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., with the team taking the field at around 9:15 a.m.
