Looking at fiusport.com and the roster, two things amazed me. April 9, 2004 Roster1) The roster totals 71 players which is less than every I-AA roster I have seen on the web. As we know, a I-AA team can allocate 63 scholarships and the better teams give out 63 and have additional walkons. A I-A team can give out 85 full scholarships, so my question to you who are familiar with the program is, where are the remaining players? If all 71 are on scholarship then where are the remaining 14 players? Probably all 71 are not on scholarship, so that would indicate there are more that 14 scholarships which are available. 2) There is no current depth chart on the web. Please update last year's Depth Chart

Well you can take three more off that depth chart; #1 RB, #1 RC and #2 LC, so the depth just got that much thinner.
To your point; Strock has probably brought in 10-15 scholarship worthy players per year over the last 4 years, the rest have been walk-ons and/or transfer-ins. So to give out the full compliment of 63 as a D-IAA or 85 as a D-IA is going to take some time. Also, through attrition you probably lose a few players every year. Scholarships cost the University money, so until a player shows (either in High School or at FIU) that he can cut it not only on the filed but also in the classroom he reamins a question mark.
I'm sure that in three or four years we will be giving out near the max' of the schollies available; but I believe that building up a team of scholaship worthy players is just a matter of time.[/size]

Looking at the chart, it's not up to date. Everyone on that list is a class higher now. Also, the incoming class, all 20 or so of them aren't on there plus any transfers we have coming in.

The first thing I noticed is that the website is not up to date.
X is correct - what I posted is last year's depth chart which you can find at the link referenced in the 1'st post. Once we know who received Letters, have returned to FIU, and what positions they are playing we can update our depth chart. That is the point I am raising - The website is not up to date so if you have the information, I will update this chart!
I must disagree with you regarding scholarships. If we want to compete at the I-A level we better recruit and sign as many athletes as the NCAA allows. After 3 years we should have given out all the scholarships between freshman, transfers, junior college students and walk-ons who earned scholarships by their performance. Recruiting expenses are minimal. Look at our roster, everyone is from Florida and most from within 50 miles.

Have we recruited anyone, lost anyone (at least 3) or had any walk-ons since Feb? Probably, so these 26 names should have been added to the April 9 roster [see post #1 for link to April 9 Roster]. Wednesday, February 4, 2004 FIU Announces 2004 Football Recruiting Class FIU head football coach Don Strock believes his Golden Panthers will become bigger, stronger and faster with the infusion of 26 new student-athletes introduced on National Signing Day at FIU Stadium. Florida International University head coach Don Strock today announced the Golden Panthers fourth-ever football recruiting class consisting of 26 high school seniors who signed national letters of intent and will attend the university next fall. It was the largest signing class and “best talent pool” since Strock’s very first National Signing Day when the Golden Panthers inked 27 first-day student-athletes on Feb. 7, 2001. “Overall, we’re very pleased with this class. We improved our overall team speed. We’ve gotten bigger, particularly at the cornerback positions. Now, all we have to see is if they can play at the intercollegiate level,” said Strock. "Without a doubt, we improved our defensive line and backfield. I think we have a couple of running backs who are really going to help us out over the long run and we’ve added speed at the wide receiver position.” All 26 players are from the State of Florida, including 14 from Miami-Dade and two each from Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

After reading the Spring Prospectus, it lists 78 or 79 players including Tori Robinson, Mike Sherril (academically ineligible this Spring), and the 3 accused ones. It also states there were at least 14 walk-ons in the team. Now, in I-AA, "partial" scholarships are allowed, meaning they can "divide" full schollies amongst a number of players.
We have now "officially" signed 27 players (including Ben Reynolds of Killian) for next season. Also, several rumors indicate that the Miller twins, from Palm Bay, may have transferred to FIU as well. The I-A scholarship limits are to 85 players in each year. I would suspect that either: A) I-A also allows for partial scholarships B) Some of the "recruits" will not get a schollie for next year. C)Some "current" players in the roster will be dropped before the start of next season. or D)...A combination of all of the above.
