I just received this invitation: Student Alumni Association June 30, 2004 Please join us for a reception announcing the launch of the FIU Medical School on Thursday, July 8, 2004 at 2:00 pm. Did I miss something? I thought the state didn't vote on the Med School yet.

I hope so. A well established Law and Medical school are almost as important as a strong D1a football team. Almost.

Where's the meeting being held?
This is great news if true.
Just went to the official web-site and there is a prominent link on the home page to 'Medical School Initiatives' and this link health.fiu.edu/current_affairs/briefing_notes.htm talks about requesting authorization from the Board of Governors of the State of Florida , for the development of a new medical school program (nothing new here).
So, so far, nothing official from what I can see but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. FIU does seem to be creating a higher profile for a possible announcement which may be coming soon.

Does this mean this is a foregone conclusion? It sounds pretty positive to me. Wow!! That would be yet another HUGE boost for our University. If anybody gets any other information, please let us all know......
FIU:
Over 35,000 students Many nationally known programs and alumns Extensive-Research University FIU Football I-A Architecure School Law School Medical School
Would this be a coup or what? Only the TOP handful Universities in the nation can claim to have all the elements I just described above.

The reasons for a Medical School at FIU as I see them:
1.) There's no 'Public' Medical school in S. Fla (pop. > 6,000,000)
2.) Minorities are underrepresented in the professional medical fields
3.) Population growth, esp. in S. Fla is booming.
4.) FIU has proven to be a fiscally responsible choice for education dollars
5.) Scripps, a huge health care/medical research organization, is moving to S. Fla needing many more professionals trained in the medical field.
It looks as though the push for a medical school is gearing up and there are good reasons for the development of one here (beyond those listed above) but I don't think anything has been resolved as yet.

The formal announcement and reception will be held in the MARC International Pavillion (2nd floor).
I hope it goes through and starts in 06. After my masters, I'll be going back for a doctorates and a med school would vastly help with the research I'd like to do.

That statement came from the invitation sent out. I assume it is the announcement to present a plan to the state.
The MARC is the new building south of the Graham Center and next to where the new Museum will be constructed.
