More than 200 dancers will hit the dance floor at the Recreation Center at University Park for the 25-hour FIU Dance Marathon on March 1-2, to help raise funds for the Miami Children's Hospital Foundation.
This year’s goal, says Mariela Campuzano, coordinator of the Center for Leadership and Service, is $100,000. Last year, $86,135 was raised at the event.
“We expect students to realize they can make a positive difference though something entertaining,” she said. “Especially through the programming we have this year – our theme is The Wonderful World of DM.”
Organizers have secured sponsorships that will ensure every participant has a good time while dancing for this worthy cause. There will be appearances from Miami Heat and Florida Marlins dancers, giveaways from the Y-100 Street Team and a performance by A Pair of Nuts, the comedy duo comprised of School of Theatre, Dance and Speech Communication graduate Yamil Piedra ’03 and former student Johnny Trabanco.
Since its establishment in 1997 at FIU, Dance Marathon has raised more than $500,000.
The first Dance Marathon was held in 1973 at Penn State University in an attempt to rebuild the image of that school's Interfraternity Council and in support of local charities. A modest 39 couples entered that first contest, lured in part by a $300 prize for the winner.
Today, the event has grown from its humble beginnings at Penn State to include more than 75 institutions across North America, including the University of Florida, Emory University, Florida State University, George Washington University and the University of North Carolina.
Overall, more than $2 billion has been raised by Dance Marathons around the country, benefiting an estimated 12 million children annually.
Dance Marathon is the largest student fund-raiser at FIU. For more information, call 305-348-2149 or visit www.fiu.edu/~dm.
