FAU to name Jarvis coach BY SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN Mike Jarvis is about to begin a four-year contract as men's basketball coach at Florida Atlantic University. FAU will introduce Jarvis, 63, as its coach Tuesday at the Boca Raton campus, a high-level source close to the FAU athletic program told The Miami Herald on Sunday evening.
Jarvis' hiring is pending formal approval by the FAU Board of Trustees. That approval is expected to pass.
''We are having a press conference on Tuesday to make an announcement, that is true,'' FAU athletic director Craig Angelos said. ``But I won't say what the press conference is for.''
Jarvis combined for a record of 364-201 while coaching St. John's (1998-2003), George Washington ('90-'98) and Boston University ('85-'90). He led all three programs to NCAA Tournament berths.
Jarvis will replace Rex Walters, who left FAU in April to become the coach at San Francisco.
Jarvis has not coached since he was fired from St. John's in December 2003. He lives in Boca Raton, about three miles from the FAU campus. FAU officials believe his hiring will bring a new fan base to the school and increase ticket sales.
FAU added basketball in 1988 and entered the NCAA's Division I in 1994. The Owls' lone appearance in the NCAA Tournament came in 2002. They lost to Alabama in the first round.

Palm Beach post column....
Jarvis is new FAU hoops coach By mnelson@pbpost.com | Sunday, May 25, 2008, 09:46 PM
Florida Atlantic has its new basketball coach and it’s former St. John’s coach Mike Jarvis.
According to sources familiar with the search, Jarvis will be named the Owls coach on Tuesday at a news conference.
So after many premature reports over the last few weeks, it appears the search is over.
I’ll give credit where credit is due on this one after WPTV’s Ryan Lieber posted on the station’s web site Sunday afternoon that Jarvis had accepted the offer and would be announced on Tuesday.
Lieber has a good relationship with Jarvis, who is a frequent guest on WPTV’s Sunday night show 5 Sports Live, and I had a feeling this report was different from some of the other ones out there which had Jarvis taking over weeks ago.
We should have all been so lucky.
The search, FAU’s third since 2005, was longer than the rest, but is over and the Owls got the guy they appeared to want all along.

Thats crazy how are they kickin our butts on these hires!?!
I like the potential of our coaches but they keep hiring proven winners and thats why they are ahead of us now even though we have more money, more alumni, a bigger, more traditional campus and a top 10 media market.
WTF

Jarvis took th job for $175K plus incentives ?? If I am not mistaken, Sergio is getting paid much more than him...........The last AD was an absolute IDIOT, he gave Rouco guaranteed $$$ over the contract and that's why PG has not WHACKED HIM YET.
