Posted on Tue, Apr. 15, 2008 University leaders mandate budget cuts Florida International University administrators have mandated across-the-board budget cuts for all academic departments, and may consolidate certain colleges in an effort to cope with expected deep cuts in state funding. At a town hall meeting with students and faculty Monday at FIU's University Park campus, President Modesto ''Mitch'' Maidique, Provost Ronald M. Berkman and Chief Financial Officer Vivian A. Sanchez said the deans of FIU's various colleges have been given 10 days to propose departmental trims to meet budget targets.
Maidique projected overall budget cuts as ''best case scenario, 4 percent, worst-case scenario, 7 percent.'' Individual schools face varying budget-cut targets, depending on average cost per student and outside funding sources, he said.
The School of Architecture and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, among others, could be integrated into the College of Arts and Sciences, Berkman said.
