Med schools "food fight" ends with FIU getting UM money
Rep. David Rivera, a Miami Republican, pushed through an amendment to the House's $65.1 billion budget on Thursday that took $3.5 million from the University of Miami and gave it to Florida International University. The House budget put together by Rep. Joe Pickens initially had kept FIU's medical school funding at its current $11.6 million level, a move that FIU officials said could jeopardize the 2009 opening of the school.
Rivera said it was right for UM to help its crosstown neighbor: "If you need to borrow some sugar, you go next door to your neighbor." But Rep. Ron Saunders said this just showed why lawmakers should not have created the FIU medical school to begin with because it was creating a "food fight" between institutions. Saunders said it was wrong for Rivera, the House rules chairman and a top ally to House Speaker Marco Rubio, to come in at the last minute and propose the amendment.
