Does anyone else think that the apartments are a waste of space? They are stretched out over too much land. Maybe the school should demolish them and build a more space friendly dormitory. They could probably fit more kids that way.

You know, I was just thinking that exact same thing when I saw it last night. I hope they take that into consideration, they could be 2/3 everglades hall in that area.

I thought the same thing as well. They really need to use that space more wisely with that part of the campus.

Although it brings tears to my eyes (as I had a GREAT time there the first 3 years it was built!), I was thinking about that the other day, just as well. Perhaps we could put double, or triple the amount of people in that area. When I used to live there (by the way the apartment "dorms" where inaugurated in August 1985, not 1986 as the website reports) the number of students living there was around 700 reportedly. If you build a 2,000 student dorms complex, it would add 1,400 more students to campus just by redesigning the original "dorms" space where the apartments now are.
I have seen where more dorms are to be built also in the parking area just west of the Education Building in the future. We still, in my humble opinion, need to add many more "beds" to campus, in order to make the transformation of FIU into a more "traditional" campus a viable option. I just wish the Youth Fair Grounds Area would be, somehow, acquired and add plenty of space (maybe around 100-160 acres) for our growth. I don't mention the Tamiami Park area, as I consider it too valuable for the immediate area and with its new softball parks and such, almost impossible. However, the Youth Fair grounds, which are really only used 3-4 weeks a year could be done...if a new, more desirable place could be found for it....

it could easily be done in phases too, just take one building at a time and demolish it and replace it with a 5 story dorm building with similar living arrangements to the current dorms offer. Don't start the next one until the previous one has been done. That way only one 5 story dorm will be built at a time while revenue comes in from the new building.

I think that the area just east of FIU Stadium and south of where the long parking lot is (west of the Wertheim Performing Arts Center) should be acquired and then eventually all of the fairgrounds. We really need the space on campus and every acre counts.
And as much history as the UP Apartments may have, I hate to say it but, they have to go eventually. I live on campus and from living on campus, I can tell you FIU NEEDS to build more residence halls. There is a higher demand than what's available and Lakeview Hall N & S helped but more need to get built. I saw in the Master Plan that 2-3 more residence halls are planned west of the Ziff Building but the question is WHEN? We need more residence halls ASAP.

the long lot between the WPAC and the stadium is eventually going to become a parking garage.

They could probably fit more kids that way. That's what I've always thought...there are so many buildings they could tear them down and rebuild 4 story building that would hold just as many people in half the space.

I personally hope that they never tare down those apartments. I lived there for the two years that I attended FIU, and have sooo many memories. Me and my buddies occupied b-104 and g-101(g-spot). we threw the sickest parties and were best of friends. Being up in NY, I have lost touch w/ many of them, but my memories will always live on. Those were the apartments that I met my current girlfriend. We owned those apartments, and I hope they never ever get rid of them. I know many call it the "ghetto" of FIU. But to me, it was home.

Actually, they're very nice with all the old, shaded trees and foliage, it's just their low-density, and FIU needs to build more for its land.

I hope that they don't tear down the apartments I will be living in them this upcoming fall (G-spot) and I can't wait. I think they are amazing and they are the cheapest place to live on campus. I'm paying 2248$ a semester while people in lakeview are paying 4000$ a semester. If they tear them down I hope that they don't do it for the next two years.
