MIAMI – After one of the top performances in the nation on Friday, FIU senior Ronald Forbes was named the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Men’s Track Field Athlete of the Week, it was announced by the conference Wednesday afternoon for the week ending February 10.
Forbes won the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.68, which matched the fastest time in the nation coming into Friday’s action at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City (Tennessee’s Jangy Addy ran 7.67 the same day to take over the top spot). Forbes, who came into the event tied with the sixth-fastest time recorded in the nation (7.81 at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic in Gainesville, Fla. on Jan. 26 – adjusted from 7.28 55-hurdle time), is one of just three NCAA Automatic Qualifiers in the 60 hurdles in the country along with Addy and Ty Akins of Auburn, who ran his 7.68 (adjusted from 55 hurdles) at the same race in Gainesville.
Forbes’ time of 7.68 also beats his own school record in the 60 hurdles. He ran a 7.91 earlier in the day in qualifying, which broke his previous record of 7.98 set back at the Purple Tiger Invitational in Baton Rouge, La. on Jan. 19.
This is the second time this season that Forbes has been named the Sun Belt Male Track Athlete of the Week. FIU seniors Joeane Jadotte and Kerry Walker have also garnered Sun Belt Female Athlete of the Week accolades earlier in the season.
The Golden Panthers are back in action two weekends from now when they travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. for the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships from Feb. 23-24.
Congrats to Ronald!!!
