FIU has received commitments from two players of the #1 ranked JC team, Indian Hills JC in Iowa. Big 6-7/230 PF Nestor Colmenares clogs up the middle defensively, while leading the team with 14 points and 8 rebounds a game. He shoots 70% from the field! Shooting Guard Robert Palacios, a 6-2/180 athlete doesn't have gaudy numbers, averaging 5 points and 5 boards, but is thought to have a good all around game. Both players are from Venezuela. www.flavarsity.rivals.com/content.asp?highlight=florida+international&CID=653721Colmenares was a preseason Street and Smith 4th Team JC All America selection.

Sounds like the pipeline is finally starting to produce some results.

Yep. Interesting thing though, is that it was mainly Southeastern CC in Iowa the one witht the pipeline. We still have some players being "placed" there, as Badara Ndyie comes to FIU from Southeastern. Now, it's Indian Hills CC...the new nation #1 ranked team in JC.
There are, by my count, still 2 scholarhip "openings" with these new signings. We have 6 returning scholarship players:
Essola Sophomore PF/Center Gacesa Sophomore SF/PF Nsangou Sophomore PG Galindo Junior SF/PF (Starter) Fuller Senior SF/SG (Starter) James Senior PG (Starter)
We have two players sitting out this year:
Russell Hicks 7'0 Center Junior (Starter) Kenneth White SG/PG Junior (Possible Starter?)
...And now we have one signing and two commitments (April signing period..)
Badara Ndyie 6'11 Center/PF Junior Nestor Colmenares 6'7 PF Junior (Starter) Robert Palacios 6'2 SG
This gives us 11 scholarship players for next year, out of a maximum of 13......Unless Sergio can find two real studs to come to FIU, I don't expect him to get both this year. Maybe one this year (maybe another point guard?), so that we could sign 3 for next year's class with the two seniors to be leaving.....Things are definitely looking very good now, in my opinion, if Colmenares comes...he fills a void in the Power Forward position, thus moving Galindo to his most natural Small Forward position, not Center or PF...

Good point Fanatic, Colmenares will really free up GAllindo, especially with his strength and what I would assume is a low post game.
so are 5 would be: Russell Hicks 7'0 Center Junior (Starter) Nestor Colmenares 6'7 PF Junior (Starter) Galindo Junior 6' 7 SF (Starter) Fuller Senior SG (Starter) James Senior PG (Starter)
Question! That looks solid but I want to know from those who saw games this year, is James our starting PG? From games I heard on the radio he sounds ultra quick but his assists werent all that or points. Do we need to find someone else or does he bring all the intangibles a PG needs. NOting against the guy just didnt see a game this year here in NY.

James struggled when the season started making very sloppy passes and having too many turnovers, but as the season went on he seemed to take care of the ball better which is why we began to win more games. His scoring also increased as he gained some confidence in his three point shots and made a few big ones here and there. He lacks size big time though, they would take advantage of him on defense because of that.

Oh well...I just jinxed the #1 ranked team. Indian Hills got upset and eliminated in the first round of the National Junior College Championships in Hutchinson, Kansas by unranked Seminole State. However, Nestor Colmenares had a pretty good night, with 19 points and 15 boards, while hitting on 7 of 12 free throws ( must try to improve!). www.ottumwacourier.com/sports/local_story_080214834.html?keyword=secondarystory

Really looking forward to seeing this new starting nucleus, lots of upgraded size and mass, which is probably what we needed most!

good to know Maxx, Maybe ROuco has one more PG in the works This is not anything that I can substantiate, but rumor has it that FIU is looking at 2008 PG from Niceville Tory Kirkwood. Again, I can't provide any data on this, as it was just word of mouth. But if this proves to be true, I think it would be good for FIU. Having watched Tory since he was in the 6th grade, I think he could bring some good things to the court. He seems to handle pressure well, as he got his first start at the varsity level in the 9th grade. He has a tremendous drive and good nose for the open court. I did not get to see him play this season, since I was already back in Atlanta, but the word I was given was that he was improved over last year, which says a lot. If I get anything further on this I will pass it along.

It seems like Sergio is really loading up for the next couple of years. FIU got a verbal yesterday from PG Tremayne Russell who last year prepped at Maine Central Institute. Before that he was South Dade High School where he avg. 19 pts. & 6 assts. as a JR. and 20 pts. & 5 assts. as a SR. In 2006, he was the #4 ranked player in Dade County by In The Zone Magazine. Also in 2006, hoopscooponline had him ranked as the #8 point guard and #39 overall player in Florida.

Awesome, fiu1994. It seems as if 2007-08 will bring us a much improved team (not counting the experience that this year's squad will carry over). Has the herald (or anyone) picked up on this commitment yet?

Both Rivals.com and CSTV.com have him down as a solid verbal.

Great news...Thanks '1994.....I'm also glad he is a local product. Now, unless he really gets a super prospect (or someone leaves the team), I would expect him to hold on to that extra scholarship for the following recruiting class......
Looking pretty good, this class and returning players...

Rivals.com now says that Robert Palacios has now committed to Northern Colorado as of Yesterday. It says that FIU also offered him....I wonder if Colmenares (hope not) also changed his commitment, or is solid with us. Today starts signing period....Let's hope we nab him and other stud....
