You are right, even more so, both Presidents at times spoke of the advantages of having "both" Medical Schools added as an advantage to the state as a whole. The administrators/Presidents were far more, as you say, pointing out the good in their proposals without minimazing the other one.
UCF's President ended up his proposal basically as a "package deal', including FIU in his reasonings to the Board of Governors. Guys, the presentations were excellent. Now, wait until March it seems.

Here's an article about the Proposals presentation to the Board of Governors. In my estimation, after watching part of the webcast, this article is pretty much on the money. It seems the estimated annual cost after the second year is indeed around $20 million a year, according to Presidents Maidique and Hitt. Maybe the Orlando paper were too much of cheerleaders in their cost estimation. There is one board member who was an a----le, and it turns out to be a member of Nova Southeastern Board of their Med School (according to this article), and in the original AP release they mention he was a professor at UM's Medical School...Talking about Conflict of Interests.... I'm glad the writer mentions Maidique's "feel" of the Governors, since the AP release only mentioned the fact that the Board was skeptical, mentioning 3 or 4 who asked questions (including dopey Zachariah), without mentioning at least two BOG members I SAW (McCollum and Marta Pelaez) pretty much "cheerleading" the proposals.....It seems we need to get at least 3 more votes until March....I hope we can do it, and would bet Orlando and some Miami officials will make their best efforts to see this happening.... www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/13197681.htm

Amigos y Amigas,
I'm going to resist the temptation to join the whine-fest. Fellow FIY alumn, friends and family of FIU, let's be the first to stop giving soo much darn attention to that other small private college on the east side of town. Although I respect your right to express fustrations, enough is enough. Listen, we have enough FIU grads imbedded at every significant institution, private or public, in South Florida, including The Herald. If we ever cared to stop whining and recognize the power we could broker in this town if only we networked more consistently and effectively, we could theoretically capture the attention we always "talk about" instantly, overnight. We are huge, not only in numbers, but in position and stature. Corporately, FIU needs to engineer a branding campaign that makes a difference and could be sustained for generations to come. In the meantime, we alumni must figure out ways to make a positve impact at the grassroots level and stop wasting soo much time discussing that other school, agree?
Sorry for any typos...i'm in a rush and gotta run.

Welcome aboard pantera, hope you post often.
Sorry if our complaints sound like whining, I feel it is more a 'connect the dots' exercise. I also feel there are a lot of new/young people in the FIU community who may not have seen all the things that have gotten us to where we are today.
I do think you are correct in that we need to pull together and try to resist the urge to blame others. Thanks for taking the time.
Cheers.

Well said Pantera, I too was getting tired of all the whining and bashing. It's time to stop the blame game and look inward for results.

Thanks for the love FIUSportsFan and FIUFan.
At the grassroots level, I recommend all FIU alum to refresh their FIU branded wardrobe. From casual t-shirts on the weekend to FIU embroidered business gear during the work-week, I can't tell you the amount of alum or students who stop me or simply call out "go FIU" when they see me sporting my FIU gear. I not suggesting a silly goofy hat (unless you're into that) - but rather cool gear that others could easily see themselves wearing. I believe all students and FIU alum have a roaring Golden Panther fan burning inside but fear they'd look silly because they believe no one esle loves FIU like they do. Seeing other's sporting FIU gear around town encourage others to do the same. It sends the message, "it's okay to be a G.Panther and proud." Next, get your FIU vehicle tag right now. And when you see a tag on a vehicle while driving around town, honk, wave and shout "nice FIU tag" or "go FIU!" My final tidbit of the evening, when speaking to people, challenge yourself to find a way to introduce the fact you are associated witih FIU within the first 5 minutes of the conversation. Harvard grads figure out a way to always flash their Harvard affiliation within the first few minutes of any conversation with a new contact, DO THE SAME! All of these suggestions will start to not only fuel your passion for FIU but encourage others who are looking for an FIU role model.
Go Gold and Blue of FIU (this rhymes better than Blue and Gold)

I'm sometimes appalled at how some reportedly reputable and knowledable institutions can reach conclusions based on factual errors, misinterpretations, or half-truths...Give the full picture, I'm happy....Here is a Sun Sentinel editorial...... Why not include donations so far pledged? Why not include the economic benefit in taxes to the governing bodies, both local and state with the addition of an FIU Med School? Why not?.... www.sun-sentinel.com/news/opinion/editorial/sfl-editdlfiuschooldec12,0,3895891.story

The reason they don't look into facts or post only half truths is because it fires up readers such as those who post on this board and makes us keep reading just to see what sort of crap they will put next! News companies aren't about providing a service to educate and inform the masses... they are about getting readers and making people mention them as much as possible...
its mostly marketing, not news

Right, as Fanatic points out, there are many benefits to this initiative but the 'egg heads' who do most of the writing around here are too lazy to get into the real meat of the issue. This includes benefits such as addressing the lack of health care for many south Floridians, the m.d. shortage, the economic impact to S. Fla. and the rest of the State, minority representation in the medical field, and on and on. And don't forget dollars already raised and commitments already received.
Great endeavors do cost money, if we're going to be a great State, we need to invest in great infrastructure. And it's about time S. Fla received some of the community investments the rest of the state has enjoyed for many, many years.
