All over the news - Diamos Demerritt, Everett Baker and Randy Arnold were arrested on charges from aggrevated assault to attempted murder stemming from an incident involving a gun on FIU grounds. Melo appeared on CBS 4 and made a statement...channel 7 said a "source" of theirs close to the situation says this was a drug purchase/deal gone bad. FIU police were unavailable for comment due to the long weekend. Not exactly how we envisioned FIU Football getting more exposure in the local media. |

This is a BIG slap in the face of the program. We are trying to create our OWN identity, not follow in the footsteps of the UM of the 80's or today's Miami Dolphins ;D Coach Strock needs to come down hard and swift to put all the other players in their place before it becomes a chain reaction. This is a sad day in the history of the program  Hopefully it's the last one like it! |

Disappointing and unacceptable indeed. It bothers me tremendously to have members of our university involved in these kind of situations. We can't allow to have student-athletes with these kind of behaviors.....Having, carrying, and discharging guns on campus, especially with charges of robbery, specifically for drug purchase, cannot be tolerated. Strock, Mello, Maidique have to send a clear, strong message of the kind of behavior to be tolerated...
I just saw Mello on Channel 7.......It's embarrasing to FIU all this 'publicity". I heard Channel 7 reporter stating that the players were "kicked off' the team and suspended from the University.... Channel 33 has it all over the news as well......
Oh well......I'm in Miami, and this is what I see......

I forget who it was that posted messages on here preaching about the immorality of UM recruiting Willie Williams because of his past criminal record. Where is/are that person or persons now? Why aren't you getting on Strock's or Mello's case for recruiting thugs as well? Arnold has a rap sheet that makes Williams look like an altar boy, even being expelled from a high school. Im sure the other 2 have comparable records as well.
Ive said it before, Strock's job was too help get this program off the ground. He has never been and will not be an acceptable head coach. His track record supports this. The discipline problems on this team were evident from the begining, off the field (fighting and theft) as well as on it (bonehead personal fouls). Its time we find a proven coach who can be a leader and mentor as well as a solid recuiter.
Now we have these 3 "gangstas" brandishing guns on our campus and shooting them off. Not too mention dealing drugs on the doorstep of where some students sleep. Shame on Strock, shame on Mello for bringing in these type of "human beings." And shame on those hypocrites who are quick to criticize others but remain silent when it hits home, harder.

You have a valid point about thuggery not being accepted, but let's not get overboard with these. Trying to compare bad kid "X" with bad kid "Y", and then trying to make FIU's bad kid, "badder" that Um's is kind of lame and irrelevant (perhaps even wrong.) I don't think it's necessary to make this comparison, and make FIU's bad kid "worst" to make a point. The real point is that this type of behavior and kids should not be at ANY college participating..... All I've heard from FIU fans is disappointment, and the need to take the bull by its horns, and take swift actions. I've read before your thoughts about Strock...I respect your opinions, and you very well may be right, but I think you are just a bit ahead of yourself here....just waiting for an opportunity to get Strock out of the picture and criticize our program (which, granted is deserved at this point), particularly to get back at those who unfairly (I agree with you) criticize UM for every thing. Unfortunately, these situations happen accross campus in America, and fans from "rival" universities tend to "attack" the other without looking into their own mess. Just read what some (and I emphasize Some...) posters are criticizing and ridiculizing FIU.....Ironic, isn't it? After all the problems with attitude and national image of "thuggery", nobody should be pointing fingers, don't you think? Bottom line.....this can't be tolerated at FIU at any level!!! If these type situations continue to happen and no control is made, then we would have to look hard at your desire of firing Strock...... That's my opinion..... |

I was silent because I was out of town. =) This is all news to me. I hope they're kicked off the team and out of the university. Any other student would be expelled, period. There shouldn't be any special treatment for athletes.

I too have been out of town and concur with X'; these idiots need to be expelled and we should do everything in our power to help the prosecution put these people away.

just heard about it this morning. all i have to say is that i agree with strock's (and mello's) actions. suspend the players indefinitely, and let the justice system do its work.
if the players are convicted, then they won't be back. however, if they are found not guilty, then we will cross that bridge when we get to it. these guys have been arrested, not convicted.
the difference between Willy Williams and these three guys is that Williams was convicted of the crimes, while no one has been convicted of this crime.

I am very disappointed in Strock and as outraged as everyone on this board and in this community is.
I place the responsibility for this solely on Strocks shoulders.
Strock, I don't want you to bring people like that into my city and my home or in the same environment with other real students on the campus.
Don, is it so difficult to recruit players to come to FIU that you have to recruit the bottom of the barrel?
I agree with the consensus that this is a sad day for FIU sports. It appears from the reports that the evidence is overwhelming that they are guilty. However unlikely as it is in this case, as Mr. Panther pointed out, they might not be guilty.
I would like to see a written policy on the procedures the University is going to follow in the future.
Let me ask some tough questions - for which I have no answer. Should the University stand behind their students and student-athletes until such time as a legal decision is reached before expelling them and / or kicking them off any athletic team?
What is the cutoff point between support and immediate dismissal?

i think the university has to have a "hand's off" policy when it comes to student's legal problems. the university could be accused of having swayed the process for its own benefit.
also, i read in the paper that the 3 players are sharing an attorney... stupid... stupid stupid stupid.

I have to say that I can't believe what some of you people are saying!! Coach Strock isn't a babysitter. These are young men over the age of 18! They should be able to police themselves. If anyone should be blamed, it's the 3 players that committed the act. They aren't retarded, they know right from wrong. Nobody questioned FAU's Coach Schnellenberger when some of his players were ineligible for some of their games in their 2nd year. No one questioned his leadership!!! And what about all of the other coaches across the nation that have had players in trouble. What I suggest we all do is have a "wait and see" approach to this whole thing. We will see what type of Coach he is by the reaction taken and how the team, as a whole, conducts themselves. AND PLEASE DON'T TELL ME THE COACH CAN'T COACH BECAUSE WE WERE 2-10 LAST SEASON!! That argument is just weak...........

Its d**n disturbing that a takes place on campus, but for the alleged shooter to be a an FIU football player against another FIU students makes it even worse. Take at look at this piece from the sun sentinel.
In March 2001, Leon County sheriff's deputies arrested Arnold as a juvenile on three felony counts: exhibition of a destructive device on school property, carrying a concealed firearm and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, according to FDLE records. The records did not indicate the final disposition of the charges.
