A parking garage at Florida International's University Park Campus will remain closed until investigators can determine what made part of the roof collapse Wednesday afternoon.
No one was injured when a 30-foot section, which university officials described as a cornice, fell from the five-story Panther Garage, said FIU spokeswoman Maydel Santana-Bravo.
Engineers will be at the campus in Southwest Miami-Dade County today to determine what caused the cornice -- a crown-molding type of decorative element along the edge of the northern stairwell -- to collapse.
''The experts need to take a look to see why this happened,'' Santana-Bravo said. ``They need to make sure that it's safe for use.''
One student said he would think twice before parking at that garage again.
''This worries me,'' said freshman Sean Young, 20.
``I wonder what's going to happen now, with hurricane season around the corner.''
The parking garage was built about two years ago to ease the shortage of parking on the campus.
Tampa-based Walker Parking Consultants was the architect hired to design the garage, located near the Pharmed Arena on the western part of campus.
The Miami construction company Pavarini was the builder, Santana-Bravo said.
Lucy Garcia works for the university's parking department. She was inside the garage when part of the roof fell.
''We were very lucky,'' Garcia said.
``Graduation was all day yesterday. Thank God, nothing serious happened. I can say we were blessed.''
