 Public Schools Valedictorians and Salutatorians
« Thread Started on May 25, 2007, 5:25pm »

This list was released by The Miami Herald today. Interesting list, where I find more and more valedictorians and salutatorians are choosing FIU than before. Little by little we will become the college of choice in South Florida. The brightest are showing that trend....

Besides all, Congrats to these young guys in their accomplishments and good luck in the future...even if they go to UM.... ;)

It looks like FIU is well represented with these top students. But I guess I have been out of school longer than I thought. How the heck to they get GPA's higher than a 7?

Yea I'm trying to figure that out. I know honors course can give you up to 5.0 point on a 4.0 scale and AP classes 6.0 but I've never ever heard of anything that gives you 7.0

Every year, FIU is getting more and more selective in its admissions process. Admissions rates for 2005 were 63.2% but lowered greatly to 47% for 2006. Plus since 2004, there's been a 68% increase in applications to FIU. This is really great news for FIU, because it lets FIU pick and choose its students a lot better.

I do however want to say something, as a freshmen, who just did the whole college application thing not too long ago, I was the only kid in my school who was going to FIU (from a high school in Boca Raton). Most people in my school didn't know very much about FIU, and I think that it all starts with the guidance counselors. If FIU advertises itself in high schools and high school guidance offices then they can become known, but I know in my case, FIU never came to do a talk like a lot of other schools came to do. Had they done that I bet a lot of more people would have applied. Plus, FIU is such a great school, it has EVERYTHING, seriously, it's an extremely well-rounded school and it deserves to be known better. GO FIU!!!

Honors classes give you a 5 point A and AP courses give you a 6 point A, I believe IB courses get you a 7 point A, and Dual Enrollment may up that number as well.

More valedictorians from Greater Miami area have chosen to attend FIU than any other university in the country.

Another local Valedictorian is featured in yet another advertisment in The Herald. Now, FIU boasts 16 local valedictorians (from 14 earlier)....Pretty nice ad campaign...

Here's the pdf of the ad in The Herald:

...and here is the release in the University website, including the "interview" with Cindie:

I agree also on the fact that FIU needs to do much better in the marketing department. I have two youngster in high school in Palm Beach county and there schools have no posters or literature on FIU while FAU, UF and FSU standout all over their guidance office. Ironic in my personal case, while deciding on which college to attend, I had all sorts of info on FIU while attending college in Puerto Rico. BTW....my kids are brainwashed anyways and they know which college they will be attending. GO FIU!!!

It seems to me that the upcoming college of medicine is a big influence in having more top notch students choosing FIU. Since the 2 featured valedictorians want to go into medicine.

It is, and both the School of Architecture and College of Law attract a lot of students too. FIU is just so well-rounded that your possibilities are endless here.
